Weight cutting for MMA has been a topic of debate for many years. UFC fighter Gunnar Nelson shares his thoughts on it, and talks about Conor McGregor moving up a weight class.

Despite being one of the smaller fighters in the division, Gunnar Nelson has been climbing up the welterweight ladder, going 5-1 in the UFC so far. The decorated grappler is one of the rare few who don't cut as much weight, and Nelson says he isn't really a fan of the rules that allow unhealthy cuts.

"I just think guys should fight [at] their weight. And as it is now, it’s not really the fighters, it’s the rules," Nelson told Submission Radio. "The fighters are just taking advantage of the rules, and they’re working it the way it is. And they’re actually fighting guys their weight, because everybody cuts so much weight, except me maybe and a few others."

"But I think they should change it so that people can just fight closer to the weight, so that people don’t have to be cutting all this weight to have to fight people their size."

Well that stance certainly made me a bigger fan. Agree 100% Phone Post 3.0

Damn straight. Everybody ends up fighting someone their size anyway but they both cut 20lbs first. Just agree to fight someone close to your size and come to the fight at your normal in shape weight. Dehydrating yourself to squeeze into a weightclass you are too big for just to fight someone else that is doing the same doesn't make sense and is bad for your health.

Exactly...But try explaining that to Dolce and his bro science followers. He figures he can give some fool like Hendricks an advantage on a guy that weighs 190 and cuts to 170 by having a guy who is 210 try to do it regularly. Guys like Rory would still be fighting Lawler, Cruz and Dillawshaw, etc. The only thing they would have to do is cut out the 125 and probably 135 classes for men, start at 140, and then add a couple of weight classes to the upper areas, around 220 and 240. Then you'd have guys like Weidman and Jones fighting each other and guys like Rashad and Machida being in a similar class.

If Weidman didn't have to maintain a certain weight to keep weight cutting attainable, they might very well be in the same weight class naturally Phone Post 3.0

Weidman wrestled with Bader and Phil Davis. He definitely would have more cardio at 205. Bones said that for the DC fight, he cut maybe 10 or 15 lbs. Granted he was on that cocaine, but that's not much weight... Phone Post 3.0

I just want weight cutting to go away completely.
It would be safer for the fighters and it might eventually leads to more exciting fights (no gasing out, no concussion, etc...) Phone Post 3.0

Gunnar is definitely the epitome of a martial artist. He's an intriguing guy. Phone Post 3.0

Big fan of Gunnar, makes a great point, the difficult part is to enforce fair rules to make sure fighters are able to compete at their normal weight, and that's not easy i guess.

Refreshing point of view with the AC starting to look at weight cutting there might be limits on it soon. Phone Post 3.0

What does he make of his team mate being a huge weight cutter and owing a lot of his success to being such a big 145er?

I really agree with him, but I don't think that anything will change the way it is right now Phone Post 3.0
