You're probably right, unless they don't really know based on eyewitnesses. but obviously there'd be brass either .556 or .223 if it was an AR. Not sure if the average reporter would be savvy enough to figure that out though. If it was poor shot placement it could have been anything. Interestingly, .22 accounts for the most deaths annually of all calibers, probably because of the availability.
