Hardy

Dan Hardy has been on a roll. He has won 10 out of his last 11 fights with the only loss coming because of disqualification due to an inadvertent kick to the groin against Yoshiyuki Yoshida . Now after winning two straight in the UFC Hardy is starting to get the attention of the fans and Marcus Davis.

“I don’t like the kid.” Davis told ATO last week. “I think he’s got a big mouth. I don’t like the way he looks. I don’t like the way he acts. I look forward to smashing him in the face many times.”

Although Hardy has won five straight fights including his last two in the UFC Davis isn’t impressed. “He’s fooled everybody. He’s only had two fights in the UFC. And then he goes and does an interview where he starts crapping all over Georges St. Pierre. He’s crapping all over me talking about me saying I’m a little speed bump. He wanted to fight someone better but he’s settling for me. He’s saying all kinds of crap like I have all kinds of holes in my game and I’m slow. I don’t read the stuff but my friends and family do and they send it to me. All he is doing is pissing me off and making it personal. That only happened one other time in my UFC career and that guy got knocked out really quick. The same thing is going to happen. I’m going to smash him into pieces.”

All of this started at UFC 95 when Hardy expressed an interest in fighting Davis noting how Davis fought in the UK several times and had developed quite a following. Hardy insisted it was his home turf and he would defend it.

Earlier this week ATO caught up with Dan Hardy as he prepares for the fight at UFC 99 against Davis. “I really would have thought that someone of his age would be able to deal with this kind of stuff a little better.” Hardy said. “I hope he can take punches better than he can take criticism, or it will be a very short night for him. I really don’t mind if he doesn’t like me, I don’t care for him much either. I do have a big mouth, but I can back it up and I really don’t care that he dislikes the way I look, he is hardly a style guru himself! For a start, his website looks like a St Patrick’s Day gift shop.”

Hardy has a very respectable 21-6 record but feels that Davis looks down on him because he’s been in the UFC longer. “He is talking like he is way ahead of me in the sport, just because he has had more fights in the UFC.” Hardy said. “The reality is, I earned my place in the UFC through working hard and beating the right opponents. I belong in the UFC and my last two fights have proved that. I can say what I like, about who I like because I am allowed my opinion and he is welcome to try and shut me up. I have studied his fights and I am confident I can beat him, I’m sure he feels the same. That is what will make this fight so exciting.

Even though the feud is getting quite ugly a few months before they actually get in the octagon Hardy says he does have respect for Davis. “I think its a great fight for the fans and stylistically, a great match up for me. I want each fight to bring a new problem that needs to be solved and I think Marcus provides that opportunity. He is a tough guy with lots of experience and he has a strong team behind him. I am expecting the best Marcus Davis to show up and fight the best Dan Hardy, and the result will be a war.”

It seems controversy has followed Hardy lately. Shortly after the fight at UFC 95 in February his opponent Rory Markham stated he had a collapsed lung that hindered him in the fight. “I wasn’t aware that Markham himself had said those things, but if he has, I think its very foolish of him. I don’t believe that the doctors the UFC employs would allow a fighter to step into the Octagon with such an injury and it certainly wouldn’t go unnoticed with all of the medical examinations he have to get done before the fight. It’s also foolish to think it would have effected the outcome of the fight.”

According to Hardy “Somebody on one of the forums said it best, “collapsed lung… more like collapsed legs!”.”

But all of the controversy aside it was important for Hardy to get his second straight win in the octagon to show he is the real deal. “It was a huge win for me, Markham is a tough guy and I am proud to have a win over him on my record. Each fight is always the most important at the time because your whole career hangs in the balance. Now the fight with Markham has past, the Davis fight is the most important.”

The fight in Cologne, Germany will be Hardy’s highest profile fight to date and he has been training in the United States but will head back to the UK for his training camp. “At the moment I am in LA. I’m working on my Jiu Jitsu and wrestling at Legends and my Boxing at Wildcard. I haven’t had a chance to go out to Xtreme Couture yet but I plan on spending a little time out there before I return to the UK for my training camp. We have all the Team Rough House fighters preparing at the same time so this next camp will be the best yet.”

A standup fight against an effective counterpuncher with a three inch reach advantage who cuts much less easily doesn't favor Davis, IMO. He should look to take Hardy down.

they were both in the VIP area at the Dana White House of Pain show last night in Beantown..

yea they were, dan was on one side and marcus was on the other, kinda funny actually.  i forgot they were fighting when i was there

Yep, didn't know Hardy was there until I saw the Boston Herald today.....

UFC fighters Rashad Evans, Kenny Florian, Dan Hardy, Marcus Davis, Diego Sanchez, Nate Diaz and local fave Joe Lauzon helping UFC prez Dana White celebrate St. Patrick's Day and the reunion of hip-hoppers House of Pain at The Roxy ...(locals showing up included New England Patriot Wes Welker and former teammate Larry Izzo [stats], WAAF [website] morning man Greg Hill, Boston playah Brian "Blackie" Black and nightclub nabob Aaron Sells)...

 lol war hardy

Hardy via KO

Marcus do your thing man

WAR hardy
hope he comes out to some more cockspar" Take em all Hardy"

Davis by picking his shots, controlling the fight.

Marcus will take this one

Marcus wins via being able to move forward while maintaining sound technical boxing. This, as opposed to, MMA technical boxing where backing down grapplers and capitalizing on mistakes creates KOs.

I do get awfully annoyed when Marcus dares his opponents to stand with him every fight and basically implies that taking it to the ground is a "sissy" thing to do. Dude certainly knows how to maximize his boxing advantage.

Please Marcus knock that Mohawk into the fourth or fifth row.

Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy Exclusive Interview

Posted by THEMMAFiend Staff on Mar 19, 2009

Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy (21-6, 2-0 UFC) is quickly becoming one of the most popular UK fighters in the UFC, and has been dubbed by some in the online community as a Welterweight version of Micheal Bisping in terms of marketability and fan-favoritism. After only one win in the Octagon (a split decision over veteran Akihiro Ghono at UFC 89), Dan was propelled into the spotlight as the co-main event of UFC 95: Sanchez vs Stephenson against heavy-hitter Rory Markham.

Considering Hardy’s willingness to stand and bang, and the fact that Rory had just come off of a brutal KO win himself, many fans expected a war.  It didn’t exactly work out that way. After little over one minute, Markham was out on the canvas from a crisp counter left-hook, and Hardy had made a statement: his punching power is not to be taken lightly.

Following the bout Hardy made no qualms about who he would like to fight next, as he called out Marcus Davis in the post-fight press conference.  Not one to back down from a challenge, Davis accepted. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva kindly obliged both men and set up the fight for the promotion’s debut in Germany at UFC 99 in June.

We recently had a chance to talk with Hardy and get his thoughts on his upcoming fight with Marcus Davis at UFC 99, how he deals with the pressure of being one of the UFC’s top UK prospects, his best story every, and much more.

The MMA Fiend: Can you describe a normal day of training and tell us a little bit about the team you train with, and possibly training partners we should watch for.

Dan Hardy: Outside of training camp, I live in Hollywood and I do most of my training at Legends MMA. I have just signed up to a new gym though, which I can’t give away just yet! During training camp, I am in the UK working with my Team Rough House training partners: Andre Winner, Paul Daley & Jimmy Wallhead and Leicester Shootfighters’ Nathan Leverton. Jimmy and Andre will be making a lot of noise in the MMA world soon, so keep an eye out for them.

A usual day of training consists of a technical session and a conditioning session. The technical session could be working on a specific area of the sport or a particular gameplan. The conditioning sessions are either cardio, strength or power based. We also do three hard sparring sessions each week.

The news broke in the last few weeks that Marcus Davis agreed to fight you at UFC 99. Without giving too much away, do you see any specific strengths Davis has, or any holes in his game?

Well, his boxing is a strong area of his game but he seems to be having more success with the grappling side of the sport in his last few fights. I wouldn’t say he has any weaknesses in particular, just that I am either as good or better in every range. I’m also younger, faster and better looking!

The fight is set for June, but the war-of-words has already begun. In a recent response to when you called him out during the post-UFC 95 presser, Davis said “I will pound his face into dust,” and also went so far as to say that you won’t stand and trade with him. Care to comment?

At about the 60 second mark, he will realize that I have every range covered and the fight is going too fast for him to keep up with. After that, it’s only a matter of time before my hand is raised. He can say what he likes about me, I get the feeling that he is trying to convince himself he can win. If that’s what he needs to do to give me a good fight, then so be it. This fight was asked for by the fans and I’m just happy to be able to give them what they want.

Your second fight in the UFC was as the co-main event of UFC 95 in front of your fellow countrymen; were you nervous at all heading into the fight?

The weird thing is, I used to get nerves all the way up to the start of the fight, but since I have signed with the UFC the nerves disappear as I walk out into the arena. I think it’s because I know that I have so much support that I feel comfortable once I get out there. The co-main event status was a real surprise to me, it really electrified the fans though and I could feel their energy as I walked to the Octagon.

Did you expect the fight to be over that quickly?

No, to be honest, I thought that it would be about a minute into the second round and it would be a right hand that knocked him out. I don’t mind though, I can’t complain about the result!

Are there any losses you seriously would like to avenge?

I’d like the opportunity to beat up Yoshiyuki Yoshida. I thought the disqualification was unfair and that he made a big deal out of the groin shot. I don’t hold grudges and without the losses on my record, I wouldn’t be the fighter I am today. Having said that, I thought my decision loss to Petz was daylight robbery. He got smashed for five rounds and got gifted a decision because his crook manager was the promoter of the event.

Hardy knows how to play the PR game. He's trying to build his notoriety, and he's doing it well.
