jjmtg - The event happened at a ABC store in Waikiki, at the Hyatt, the clerk / manager from ABC ran after the guy who stole TWO coldpacks (which hampered the escape ability), and caught the criminal on the 2nd floor of the hotel. The criminal dropped one pack when confronted and hit the clerk with the other coldpack, knocking him to the floor.
A visitor staying at the hotel intervened (took the robber down), and was "holding and controlling" him awaiting the arrival of hotel security and HPD when the criminal "stopped breathing".
Security FINALLY arrived and started CPR until HPD came and paramedics who were not able to revive the guy. Autopsy is pending and witnesses say the guy "just stopped breathing".

Correct. The guy that ended up dying was a transient from the mainland and was high on Crystal Meth. The good samaritan's father works for a Sheriff's department in California. There was also a lot of people watching and only this kid (I think he is either 20 or 21 years old) helped.
The good samaritan offered to let him up numerous times but he said something to the effect of, "I'm going to kill you as soon as you let me up."
The kid that jumped in and helped deserve some kind of medal for his deed. Not too many people would jump in like that. Free ABC T-shirt maybe???

My brother just told me he knows the guy who works in that particular ABC store (but not the manager involved), and the guy said that, after the guy clocked the manager with the beer, a bystander jumped in and helped, putting the guy in a choke. Everytime he asked the guy if he would chill if he let him up, the guy said, "If you let me up I will kill you".

A man who died July 6 after he allegedly stole beer from a Waikiki convenience store and was subdued by two people died of asphyxiation, the city medical examiner's office said.
Humberto Murillo, 33, of San Fernando, Calif., allegedly took two 12-packs of beer without paying for them from an ABC Store at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa July 6. Murillo died after a struggle with the store manager and a tourist who came to the manager's aid.
An autopsy on Murillo determined that he died of "mechanical asphyxia" and the manner of death has been classified as a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.
Witness accounts of the struggle vary, with one group telling investigators that Murillo appeared to be unconscious when the store manager and tourist released their grip on him, and a second group saying that Murillo was talking and responsive after being released to hotel security guards.
City paramedics took Murillo to Straub Clinic and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
