Tim obviously didn't respect Mercer's ability to KHTFO. Oops. Anyone with any semblance of grappling/wrestling ability and a solid game plan would have shot in on him and taken Mercer down. There's no reason, other than hubris, to stand with that guy.
I've heard some people suggest, and this was reinforced by the pre-fight press conference, that Tim and Mercer had a gentleman's agreement to make this a boxing match, despite the switch to MMA rules to make it a legal fight. That only hurt Tim and he should have realized that -- those small gloves on a gold medalist boxer, even a guy Mercer's age, equals KTFO if he connects. Tim took Mercer lightly on all kinds of levels.
