How high should heart (BPM) go during fight?

During one of the fights in Japan one of the cornermen said to the fighter "your heart rate is still good".

So i was wondering how high or what is to high during a MMA fight?

160BPM ?
170BPM ?
180BPM ?
190BPM ?
200BPM ?
210BPM ?

Interesting cause with all the stress of a fight, adrenaline ect. How high should a fighters heart be inbetween rounds?

Good question, and there are likely to be some differing opinions; but I would try to tailor my workrate to keep my heart rate less than 80 to at most 90 percent max, as you start reaching your max HR you will have exceeded your ability to deliver O2 and start anerobic metabolism which will create lactic acid. A good trainer will often do cardiopulmonary testing and know the athletes areobic threshold and VO2 max, which will allow the cornermen to give even better advice as to when the fighter can push the pace Phone Post

I don't know for sure but I don't think it should be above 180. Although it should never be above 180 wether fighting or anything for that matter. Phone Post

DanTheWolfman - I am guessing 150-175, 150 out pointing striking battle, 175-180 for a hard round with some scrambles, clinching, wrestling etc. When I used to do machines they would say like 185 bpm but I don't think that is correct. Did a Stress incline heart test for 15 minutes 2 yrs ago, Heart Specialists goal was to get me to 180 and after 15 min of running uphill it was like 118 or something.....said I was still in shape and had a strong heart.

Used to grapple with Ryan McGivern, the guy with a 49 Resting heart rate.

Shoot 118 is my resting HR. LOL!

I think the more important stat would be how fast your (heart) recovery rate is.

So what is to high??

What range is good (probable) 160- 170 for 5 5min championship rounds. Once above 170 you are in trouble?

I wonder what Frank edgars was?

Interesting my heart rate gets super high 190s and even 200 a few times during intense cardio. Phone Post

Maxing out- fine for interval training but not ideal in a fight Phone Post

Doing a 5k run my heart rate is generally around 192 pushing up to 206 maximum when doing a sprint finish. Normally hit the 185 area about 0.3 of a kilometre in though so its 190 the majority of the run! Verdict... Unhealthy! Phone Post

This sounds about right.

After a 7minute wrestling match my hr is around 180 and 175. Phone Post

That's pretty damn high! How long do you do cardio for? HIIT or no? Phone Post

IMO as several others have said it's more your recovery time down to resting than the overall max. Anyone can do hill sprints with someone on their back and get up very high very fast.

So what BPM is normal for a fight that goes the distance at 3x5 min and 5x5min?

Does the HR go higher in a 3 round fight than a 5 rounder?

I work out on an elliptical that checks HR and I have to go at it really hard for at least 15 min to get my HR to 140. I once ran it up to 150 and thought I was going to pass out.

Got the HR that high during sprint tabatas and burpee/sprint combos. I think measuring how long it takes for your heart rate to return to the 120s is a better measurement though. Phone Post
