Reach is the most overemphasized metric there is. Speed kills, not reach.

Jon is even better in the clinch or when he gets on top, striking from a distance is not even his best game. What did he do with his reach vs Gus, Santos and Reyes?

Very. But Jones is a lot more than just reach. Though Jones’ reach is the focal point of his style.

Here’s how Jon fights:

Establishes control through size and reach. Maybe even shocks his opponent.
Stabilises the distance. He can reach his opponents, they can’t reach him.
Sets the pace.
Chips away.

He is not the fastest, not the strongest, not the most explosive. But he is very athletically gifted and is smart. Jon’s fight IQ is up there.

His opponents need a lot of athleticism to overcome his reach and that requires spending a lot of energy. He meanwhile can chip away at them. And if they do overcome the distance, Jon is a wrestler. It’s not like with a sticker, with whom, once you break through the guard, you’re more or less in the clear.

This is why the Ngannou fight was so interesting. I really believe Francis had what it takes to beat Jon. He had one round to do it. But he had the nuclear power to take him out.
