OK, so everybody hates Huerta because he got "undeserved" chances, just like Brock and all of the tuf alums. But come on, the ufc is a business, they need to make as much cash as possible like any other one. I am a huge Machida fan, but even though he's been screwed out of a title shot so far, and there are some preferred fighters he will never face, like chuck and forrest, I'm not complaining. He will beat silva, whoever else blaf throws at him and he'll get his shot eventually. It doesn't really matter when. So who cares if huerta got a few easy fights and built up a good rep before he lost to kenflo? He's not a champ, he'll never be a champ, he's smart to get out now. He wants to make more money at an easier job, like everyone else in the world. Good luck to him.
But the bottom line is that both he and blaf are in a dilemma. if huerta really wants to be a star, he needs a real badass rep. Martial artists from Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, and Jet li to Tank Abbot, Ken Shamorck, Bob Sapp and Josh Barnett have successfully parlayed their cred, deserved or not, to make large amounts of money in other venues. He is still just another pretty face. He isn't a household name as a fighter. Yet he was on the cover of si, you can't buy that kind of pub. He is worth more money to blaf then he is currently making. Yet dana can't pay up because then every other fighter would be asking for theirs. kenflo is a better fighter than roger, but he isn't worth as much. sad but true. paying roger enough to drop his ambition to be a media star isn't as important as holding the line on payroll.
Yet" el matador" is a potential goldmine for the ufc. They are clearly going after 3 major demos, the hispanic, the wwe, and the reality tv fans (ie tuf noobs). Brock has the wwe covered, and cry all you want, but he is making dana and crew arab money type money. But they have no hispanic stars and the fickle reality viewers are leaving tuf in droves. Oh, and also the gays. I can buy a bunch of fit, tired, and sweaty guys just hanging around the house. Just bein' guys. Totally not necessarily gay. It's possible. and even the guy eating the semen sushi. Sure, it sounds like THE GAYEST FUCKING THING I'VE EVER HEARD OF IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. But a dudes gotta protect his sushi. I think that's a man law or something. So hey, maybe like all those arabs that gang rape their females for showing some of their slutty eyebrows through their burkas, he was just teaching em a lession. it could happen. But now they have a homo "fighter" on the next tuf? Once is chance, twice is a coincidence, but thrice is a pattern on a liberace outfit.
Don't tell me that they keep on pushing Huerta as a "carismatic" guy when all his gives is canned cliches in a dull monotone voice. Most of those adjectives are just euphisims to get his popular with the gays. And his nickname. Guy was never a matador, being a matador has nothing to do with mma. It's like the boxing movie Fat City, guy is introduced as Joe "Irish" Jones--and he goes "but I'm not Irish" and his manager says "shaddup! It's so they know you're the white guy!" Same thing, they can't call his Roger "the ruggedly handsome Mexican" Huerta, so they got the next best thing.
So why not sign him to a regular deal, but give him additional responsibilities. Let him host the new 24/7 show, do some gay radio, star in a new reality show with bjj purple belt spenser pratt. Whatever. He hits all the demos, he gets his chance to be like rachelle and show his talent at reading cue cards and looking pretty. He can fight a few cans a year and fight a real fighter once a year. Nobody cares that dlh has been washed up for the past decade, they still watch. Let him get the camera time he wants, make his money, and be a "ufc fighter". Everybody wins.
