IBJJF Leg Lock Question

I understand the reaping rule, but I DON’T understand the rule that if you have someone in a footlock and they twist the “wrong” way, you need to abandon the footlock.

Can anyone clarify that for me…?

You don’t. You can turn both inwards and outwards under the recent change.

Previously the person who initiates the turn is responsible. The interpretation was that if the defender turns, then the attacker can remain in the footlock and finish belly down. I know firsthand because I tried turning inwards to defend and they went belly down and finished the footlock. I clrified the rules afterwards and this was what I was told. I have also discussed this point with numerous IBJJF refs and head referees.
