Is it safe to make an improvised flame thrower out of an aerosol and a lighter? I was having this discussion the other day and was told that the chances are about even that the can will simply explode in your hand. Is this true?

I've done this over 30 times, easy... it's a good way to kill black widows when they're in real PITA places to otherwise get. Spray lubricant works very well and IMO it's best to have the straw extension for the extra margin of safety. Key is to use it in short bursts.
I've had the flame go back to the mouth of the cap a couple times and it just flames a little... haven't had one explode... YET. :D
