'Is anybody shocked?' Dana White questions safety of bare-knuckle fighting

What are your thoughts on Dana White’s comments? Are they too harsh, or is he on to something?

Sounded like he was patting himself on the back way too much here.

Also saying “we’ve never had a serious injury in the ufc” meanwhile two fighters have broken their leg this year.

If I were white, I would be downplaying this as much as possible as it’s only a matter of time for the UFC. These quotes will be damning when something similar occurs in the octagon.

It wasn’t the punch that killed him, he fell on his neck which has paralyzed and killed wrestlers before.

Dana white is the kind of guy who will cheer at hockey fights and then complain about the safety in a competing organization because it’s bare knuckle.

Haha at believing he cares about anything other than making money.

Agreed

A broken leg is not a serious injury

It is a horrific injury but I get your point. Compared to a brain injury, paralysis or death, a leg break is relatively minor.

I don’t doubt that the UFC has, and exercises the resources they have, to put fighters through this testing, but it’s unfortunate that such safety measures have to be a matter of economics. In fairness to BKFC or even better yet, your local MMA promotion who’s running a show in your town this weekend, they simply can’t finance those types of activities.

IMO, the commissions should be responsible for such things, but we know that’s never gonna happen, so I’m not sure what the solution is here, if there even is one.

Also, Dana’s picture isn’t entirely accurate, either. Read some of the stories posted here about guys like Spencer Fisher and their time in the UFC. The UFC is sending fighters to UFC-picked doctors and specialists (who get paid by UFC) to perform these treatments and evaluations. I’m not casting aspersions or accusing these doctors of anything below board, but it’s definitely a conflict of interests.

If/when all this anti trust stuff ever hits the courts, it’ll be interesting to see if all this comes to light.

Relatively minor to serious injuries means that it isn’t a serious injury

That’s why I agreed with you dumbass.

Bare knuckle boxing is safer than MMA. So there’s that.

You’re spot on.
It was a mismatch, but so what. It certainly wasn’t evander vs vitor.
If anything, he should have spoken to the exact injury and how rare it is and said it could happen at anytime.

Hell, I thought Dominick Reyes broke his neck when Jiri prochazka ko’d him. He could have easily had the same injury, I wonder what Dana would be saying then.

“It is a horrific injury”

No, it isn’t

as tragic as it is, the fighters enter the fights knowing the risks. A football players knows they may get injured but is unlikley to die, a rock climber knows the potential for injury is rare but they have the possibly of death, and as for the racers at the Isle of Man TT! Yet every death at the Isle of Man is greeted with “they died doing what they loved” by family & friends. These athletes do what they do of their own free will understanding the potential risks - so who are we to judge or critisize them?
