Is Frankie Edgar the best wrestler in MMA now?

Ocean I thought about him quite a bit but he just hasn't been as dynamic and dominate IMO as Frankie has lately. He's a great fighter and one of my favs but he's a bit more lackadaisical on his takedowns and hasn't faced many (Munoz?) that were anywhere near his level in wrestling.

Still much respect for the man at 185.

Nobody is saying Jones or Cain? Those guys are easily two of the best wrestlers in MMA that I've seen. Phone Post 3.0

@Crooklyn have you seen Romeros fights, at all? He barely wrestles. He's the one relying on his strikes. DC just uses his hands to set up his wrestling which shows the extent of his ability.

DC
Askren
Yoel/Edgar

A lot of people being overlooked.

DanChow - Debatable between GSP, Frankie and Ben Askren.

GSP was better. GSP didnt have to chain his attacks together. He would usually get them off his first attempt because he had them timed so well. Frankie is of course still undersized at FW so he should def get special props but I think GSP is still by far the best MMA wrestler we've seen so far.

Askren also has not fought against elite comp yet so its unclear how good he really is (at that level).

Cormier might be tops...lets not forget about Weidman either. Mendes is up there as well, just that Aldo probably has the best tdd as well.

Edgar's chain wrestling is great. I think a fight with Mendes is in order to crown the 145 wrestling king.

VU that's what I'm talking about....the idea of that fight even being a possibility is exciting for me!

Ive been wanting to see this for a while:

2 of the best wrestler boxers in MMA right now but with diff games. Mendes is the stronger more dynamic guy but Frankie is super technical/methodical/determined. Mendes also showing much better footwork and fluidity in mixing it up. Aldo just has some of the best tdd ever.

What was his success rate against Aldo?

0? It should be on fightmetric to confirm?

I dont think Edgar got Aldo down at all? Mendes got Aldo down maybe 2-3 times but Aldo popped back up immediately all times iirc?

Ocean6 - what about that other beast from the east?

the champ Chris Weidman

Man is Weidman underated. He took down Machida pretty easily and Machida is one of the hardest guys to take down (although Machida got back up often).

Right now, you have to be able to mix up your tds with striking and Weidman does that as well as Frankie or Mendes or anyone.

Funny no one mentioned Jones either. The guy was td everyone ...until recently. He took down a beast wrestler like Bader on his first shoot iirc.

Dc.

Shocked no one mentioned Kahbib

GSP was better/ more dynamic on his first takedown attempt but when he did need to chain them together (see GSP/Kos 2) he wasn't as successful as Edgar has been. Just my perception.

There is LOTS of room for debate here, Cain, DC, Weidman, Askren, Kahbib, Mendes...just for me no one is doing it better in MMA than Edgar right now.

Kindly - In his division but I wouldn't say the whole of MMA. Phone Post 3.0
Not even in his own division. Mendes has perfect take down defense. Edgar doesn't.... Phone Post 3.0

Best wrestling in UFC: Cormier
Best wrestling in MMA: Askren
Best wrestling in Bellator: Konrad
Best wrestling in WFA: Jimmy Rustlers Phone Post 3.0

Askren has fought like one good wrestler in Hieron and he struggled with him. Not sure if anyone else he fought was known for having above average takedown defense.

Khabib is beastly.

Man, if only Cain was fighting on a regular basis I think he would be top of so many more lists like these. It's a shame he's gotten so many injuries in recent years. The guy is a near perfect fighter.
