Making an example of him? They haven't done anything to him.
Some of you are getting ridiculous with this UFC hate.
Yes, he has the right to sit out and try to renegotiate his contract and they have the right to not want to. Just because someone isn't happy with their pay and want to renegotiate doesn't mean Zuffa is obligated to do so.
They haven't made any insulting comments about him, portrayed him in a bad way or punsihed him. They just refuse to be forced into forced renegotiations by a fighter who doesn't like the contract he agreed to. Meanwhile Nate claims he was tricked, lowballed and lied to. None of which have been shown to be true. They have continued to offer him fights which he chooses not to accept. If he feels his contract was unfair then he needs to blame his manager that he pays to handle that for him.
Nate's already one of the highest paid fighters on the roster. He makes more money than some of the champions do!
What are his great accomplishments that makes him deserve more money? Winning TUF some time in the last decade? Challenging for the title? Please...
He's a good draw and has been in a ton of crazy awesome fights, but every day that he sits on the sidelines fighting on twitter instead of in the octagon is another day that his fanbase shrinks and his buying power diminishes.
You answered your own question. "He's a good draw and been in crazy ass fights". Look at the two people fighting in tonight's main event. Nate put a beat down on Cerrone and absolutely smashed Miller.
I'm not saying I agree with him and that he should be holding out for more money. He signed the contract and he should honor it. But I have no issues with Nate being on the upper end of the UFC pay scale.
I have no issues with Nate being on the upper end of the UFC pay scale either. My point was, he's already there. There are dudes in the top-10 of their divisions making a fraction of what Diaz does but you don't see them hussing and fussing about their pay. Diaz could be making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on his current contract if he chose to be an active member of the roster.
But what he's doing is demanding Anderson Silva money, without any Anderson Silva accomplishments. He's a better fighter than most, so he gets paid better than most. But he loses the big fights. To get paid like a champ, he has to win those too.
Love his fights, but no sympathy here as far as his pay is concerned.
Bullshit.
When you fight to please the fans and put your body (and record) on the line looking for a finish, then Zuffa brass says "put some wins together, win the belt, then you'll get championship money."
When you're a champion who does nothing but win, Zuffa brass says "nobody wants to see you fight! Why would we pay you more money?"

Fair enough. I think Nate's issue here is that he doesn't understand leverage and how it works. He sees Gils contract and takes it as a sign of disrespect from the UFC. He might not take into account that Gil was basically the #1 contender who just loss a razor close SD in a championship fight. If the UFC let Gil walk they'd be letting go of a top 3 fighter who fans love to see fight.
Nate on the other hand, having recently been dominated by Benson and KO'd by Thompson, doesnt have that same leverage and thinks the UFC should increase his wages out of loyalty. Although I agree Nate has paid his dues in the UFC, that doesn't necessarily hold water during contract negotiations.
Mind you, this is purely speculation and there is a strong possibility that I am completely wrong in my assumptions.
Nate just picked a terrible time to try to renegotiate. He should have put a couple impressive wins in before he started saying he wasn't being paid enough. The UFC would be foolish to give a guy a raise coming off a loss.

He's not coming off a loss, he knocked out Maynard in his last fight.
If Nate would get in there and win two more in a row,the UFC would probably redo his deal. I just want to see him fight. The longer he sits, the worse it gets for him IMO.

His accomplishments? People actually want to see him fight.
Yeah and that's why he makes 60/60 and not 15/15 like other TUF winners
Sorry to be blunt, but the guy's got 7 losses in the UFC, he hasn't won any of the big fights that would have propelled him to that next level. His pay level matches his performance; Not the very best, but far from the worst.

Which UFC champions does Nate Diaz make more money than?
Mighty mouse and TJ. And Barao before TJ. Just on their base contract. PPV points might get them more, but those guys aren't getting very many buys even though they are awesome to watch
Actually with the way he's acting and things he's saying, they almost CAN'T do anything now. Talk about sending the wrong message (if they give in now).
You have to be tactful and diplomatic in a nice way when trying to get more money out of the boss(in any job)..act like a prick and...well it's pretty obvious.
The fans think Diaz makes enough, fighting in the most elite league in the world, top 10, headliner, famous, 2nd most fight of the nights, tuf winner, 18 UFC fights (endless top levelguys).... and then they'll say, "Let's wait till he goes broke and has to fight again. He didn't make enough to live on."
...
Fighters are underpaid across the board and the fans support billionaires, billionaire contracts, billionaires with millionaire lawyers getting not so smart fighters to sign not so smart contracts. I'd be mad at Nate if he was an attorney and specialized in contact law. He's a fighter. People suggesting he is worth whatever they feel is fair, when his bosses are billionaires and he isn't happy RIGHT NOW, are dumb as fuck.
Dana wants the Diaz bros to be active, he's said it many times and he's actually defended them on multiple occasions while they have continued to shit on the UFC.
It's rare that Dana holds his tongue and doesn't start to go ape shit on a fighter (Tito & countless others ).
At this point, Nate and Nick are wasting time. Nate especially because while he has been with the UFC for a long time, he doesn't hold the same value his brother does. It's more important for Nate to continue fighting at this point. You can't bitch about a contract you're 1 fight into because your team mate was smart enough to shop around and knew how to re-negotiate a contract properly.
