It's OK for big guys to use pressure

New article by one of my students:

Rolling For Big Guys: It's Ok To Use Pressure!

Quick, easy read.

Thank i read it and it was good. Im 6'6" 225lbs and just started bjj. Ive only had 5-6 lessons now and i have began to realise that my complete lack of technique is prehaps leading me to put too much spazz pressure on people. I will certainly bare it in mind because i really would like to be considered a viable training partner for everyone in the gym.

All i have accomplished so far is taking the back of a white belt once lol, so plenty of work ahead of me. Phone Post

link isn't working... I'm 130-135 and totally agree. I need to have a good gauge of exactly what I can and can't do against someone of a particular size and strength. It effects my strategy and choice of options so I don't want to me mislead.

I read the article also. While I am only 155 I totally agree. I have some big traning partners and the only time its an issue is when they drop the weight on you. If its slow even pressure no problem just dont drop 260 on my ribs from side mount.

Sounds to me like you have a good attitude and the right mindset to learn bjj. Keep it that way and most guys will enjoy training with you. Phone Post

i recall once a long time ago that chim told me that he can't tell a flexible guy to stop being flexible, so fuck 'em.. use your strength.

No it's not! Phone Post

I think that larger BJJers should absolutely practice pressure and dropping weight.

The big area where large guys need to exercise restraint is in heavy, fast movements.  To apply pressure is one thing, but to move in very fast and spastic bursts is just going to lead to you hurting a lot of people in the Academy.  If you cannot deal with a position, be patient and wait for the opening and use proper technique.

We have a bigger guy purple belt at our gym that should read this.  Due to his talent and size, he could absolutely crush some folks if he wanted to -- yet we works technique instead.  I have sometimes felt a bit bad for him becuase he doesn't have another big dude in the gym that can really push him, and allow him to train as hard as everyone else does.  I wonder how much that holds him back from his potential?

Evan wrote a good article.
