JDS aims for behind the ear

Has anyone else noticed this? I was just watching one of his HLs and he throws all of his hooks the same spot he knocked down cain and manages to hit ppl like struve while their guard is up. Has anyone else noticed this?

i also noticed JDS seems to land the majority of his punches on the palm side not the knuckle side of his fist, must take tremendous power to get KO's that way

It's the best place to hit someone when they have their chin covered up. It really messes up their equilibrium and makes them wobble.

ya but have we ever seen another fighter throw such a high percentage of their strike to this part of the head? Or is JDS the innovator of another mini evolution in the striking of mma

It's no innovation. Lil Nog has always done it, Marcus Davis, basically anyone with a boxing background. It's where you are taught to punch when someone is just covering their faces and not making a full guard. With MMA gloves it's damn near impossible to fully guard your head, so boxers when they see the opening will go for the ears.

Lots of people have been dropped by the "standing strike to the back of the head".  I'm amazed we almost never hear the refs call it.

Serra dropped GSP like this.

Brock dropped Randy like this.

JDS drops everyone like this.

It's as illegal as the same shots on the ground, but the refs fairly consistently overlook it.

he's just smart.

Not the back of the head with JDS or randy.

GSP was back of the head but he ducked a punch poorly and did it to him self if i recall correct.

SLOtownG - Behind the ear doesn't equal back if the head. Nothing illegal about it. <img src="/images/phone/droid.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

i tend to agree with this. I think all of those shots were in the gray area or side of the head. The only fight ive seen recently that i think should have been ruled a NC or DQ is Vitor vs Akiyama as those were blatant and directly to the back of the head

Directly behind the ear is not back of the head though. It's still on the side. It's not an illegal strike the way JDS does it.

heres the HL i was watching

Yep Vitor did to Akiyama, And Rich

Vitor lands to the back of the head a lot.

JDS has always seemed legal on the side of the head.
