Dynamic BJJ: Inside the Game

Gi Chokes (4 volumes): Reg. $120. Sale price $96

Have these on VHS, but the DVDs should have the same content. They show series of chokes, starting in the closed guard from the basic position, then the armdrag. For example, Moreira shows (and Bolo explains, overcoming language problems and adding in tremendous teaching ability) the basic cross choke, then what to do to overcome various resistances the opponent might try, ending up in the armdrag position, from which another series is shown, ending up back in the straight position (interlinking the two series). It also (and very importantly) shows how to break down posture to get the chokes.

Open guard shows how to control, prevent the pass, and then similarly how to get the choke. Same for back (no hooks) and back (hooks).

Moreira is famous for his chokes, Bolo his teaching, so the match makes for a great instructional.

Dynamic BJJ (analysis): Reg. $40. Sale price $32

This shows 4 matches with Joe Moreira vs. Bolo (twice), Pierini, and Nacimento. You can watch the matches by themselves, or (better yet) with Bolo providing commentary as to the 'why' (strategy) behind what the black belts are doing, and pointing out a lot of very important little details, giving it enormous instructional value.

Guard 1 (Basics-3 Volumes): Reg $78. Sale price $63

Have not seen this one.

Guard 2 (Intermediate-2 Volumes): Reg. $60. Sale price $48

Have these on VHS, but again, same content. The first tape covers the closed guard and introduces the concept of 'reference points'. Sit up, leg-on-shoulder (high guard), whizzer (over-hook), armdrag, underhook, etc. are shown, along with several submissions and sweeps from each, how to link them together based on resistance, and how to flow from one 'reference point' to another to attack continuously. Really excellent tape that, if you don't have a gameplan yet for guard, can give you one, plus a lot more to build onto it over time.

The open guard tape shows all the basic control positions and how to flow between them to keep an opponent off-balance. (I haven't spent as much time on this one since I'm still working on closed guard).

Guard 3 (Butterfly): Reg. $40. Sale price $32

Have this but have only watched it once (still working on closed guard). Looked good, but review still pending. :)

Guard 4 (Half Guard-2 volumes): Reg. $60. Sale price $48

(See above, got them when they were on previous special, but haven't gotten to them in my own studies yet).

Guard Passing 1 (Fundamentals-2 volumes): Reg. $80. Sale price $64

Single best instructional on anything I've ever seen. Covers posture in the guard to prevent sweeps and submissions. This is super detailed stuff. Then how to break the guard open both on the knees and standing, again super detailed to avoid and overcome counters. Next comes the famous series of hug-around-the-chest and leg-on-shoulder. Also the run-around. Again, super detailed on how to overcome various forms of resistance including sweeps and submissions.

Guard Passing 2 (Counters): Reg. $52. Sale price $42

Haven't seen these.

Mount Escapes (2 volumes): Reg. $52. Sale price $42

Have these on VHS, but again the content should be the same. First volume shows all the basic escapes from the mount (bridge and roll, elbow/knee, foot drag, foot lift), along with how to overcome various resistances, and how to flow inbetween the different escapes to get out. Very well structured, very solid. Second volume does similar for the slant mount (one knee near your head, other foot posted at your hip).

Pin Escapes (7 volumes): Reg. $175. Sale price $140.

Another set I have on VHS but should be the same on DVD. Each volume covers all the core escapes from one type of side pin (side control, scarf, modified scarf, reverse scarf, north/south, knee-on-stomach), how to overcome resistance, and flow from one to the other to get out. The last volume covers how to prevent getting pinned, and how to escape when the opponent is transitioning to keep you pinned. Awesome stuff.

Back Escapes (2 volumes): Reg $60. Sale price $48.

Close second to the guard passing for one of the best instructionals ever. First DVD covers escaping when you are turtled and the opponent is in front of you (real close, semi close, and sprawled out fully), on the side (incl. going for clock choke, doing clock choke, and almost sinking in clock choke fully), and behind you in various positions. Bolo advocates aggressive escapes, and so this stuff really shines.

Second DVD covers escapes when they have the hooks in or have you in a figure-four from behind. Bolo covers the general escape, then the specifics for when the opponent is going for a lapel choke, then for a rear-naked.

Leglocks (2 tapes): Reg. $42. Sale price $34.

Haven't seen this one.

In General

All Bolo's stuff benefits from being systematic (it all fits together), integrated (the way you do one thing is often how you do many things so you never have to remember a bunch of diconnected, unrelated things), and robust (not dependant on strength, flexibility, speed, etc.)

I have Bolos Guard Passing 1 and his UG3. Both are great instructionals. The thing with Bolos instructionals is that there are never any bad reviews of his stuff. Everytime you buy from Bolo you get more than your moneys worth.
