Jiu jitsu revolution outdated?

Just rewatched some of saulo's instructional, and realized how much I still use.
How do you feel these stack up today?
And which parts have you incorporated? Phone Post 3.0

Great set. New moves will come along but the fundamentals will never go away.

The 'scoop' back escape has never worked for me against anyone with a pulse. The rest is pretty awesome.

How do you find his method of being underneath side control, I.e. blocking the cross face rather than having the elbow in the crease of their hip? Phone Post 3.0

i reckon it's cause we're too tall man. i'm 6'4 and only get it to work against noobs. saulo is small with no neck. you don't see xande doing it.

however, i taught it to some guys who can make it work on me, because of the insanc heigh difference

I also find it hard to do because it appears to assume--at least how it's taught in the BJJ University book--that the other guy has no underhook.

Perhaps it's a consequence of my being a mere blue belt, but I find it very rare that somebody is good enough to get to my back with both hooks in . . . but yet has somehow never secured an underhook along the way.

And once he's got an underhook along with both hooks in, it's hard to "scoop" downward. It's much easier to do the "classic" bridge escape. Phone Post 3.0

It's still a good set, but he's since updated much of it on BJJ Library. There are a couple of videos on the scoop escape there too: the most recent scoop escape video is from 3 weeks ago, so that might be interesting to compare with the way he taught it a few years back.

I like both ways but it's situational. I watched a video of Marcelo showing a side control escape that focused solely on the cross face and the arm pit of the cross facing arm. I've used it A LOT in the last year and it's worked really well. But, when I'm fully locked down in side control, it's pretty hard to focus on the cross face without taking some of that hip pressure away. I like both.

And I love JJ revolution. No boolsheet in there. Phone Post 3.0

The scoop is meant to be done before the guy has any upper body control. I have used it in that situation and it has worked great. Immediately after he shows that technique he goes into what to do if you are escaping later in the equation iirc. Phone Post 3.0

Morcegao it's true, I might be way too lanky.

As for the side control stuff, I find that it's absolutely crucial to block the deep crossface. Everyone at my school has evil crossface pressure so I'm not getting out of anything unless I get their shoulder off my neck.

What I also remember about Saulo's top game concepts were very useful in that set. Always keeping hip to hip control.

yep. it's anticipatory or something you bait/catch during handfighting. if you ever catch a guy getting lazy or frustrated trying to switch sides on you or lift your chin for the RNC you can usually drop right into this.

Hardly ever does someone good get back control without grips (on your neck) in place, methinks. Phone Post 3.0

Saulo teaches great fundamentals.

yes.......his top side control  dvd is the best (theory of pressuer)   but his guard and 1/2 guard dvd was disappointing. 7 time chapion using 1/2 guard.     i was really expecting the carlos machado moment.

carlos machado infinite jiujitsu tape set.   guard work dvds 1,2,3.   what helio did for my closed guard....carlos machado did for my open guard.    that aha moment....no one ever passes my open guard again.  the open guard submissions and sweeps work on command.

There are a couple of jiu-jitsu instructionals that are really good. Carlo Machado's Infinite jiu-jitsu, Robert Drysdale - Half Guard Series (seriously if you play normal not deep half guard it is the best) and anything that Ryan Hall does.

Saulo's isn't anywhere near those guys level.
