I think hes a bit overrated in that he hasnt beaten any of the top notch wrestlers and we dont know how he would do if he wasnt taking down his opponents or taken down himself. GSP destroyed him but it is GSP. I also think Nick Diaz would get the classic Fitch grind if he fought Fitch. FYI, Rashad Evans is also somewhat overrated among hardcores (to a lesser extent than Fitch though). Rashad Evans is still more complete and accomplished than Fitch.
My conclusion is: People seem to have this weird fascination with wrestlers with pretty-looking records.

Just go through several threads on different message boards.
Numerous rankings have Fitch on the P4P list even. Right behind Hendo...who's had to defeat Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort, Feijao, Fedor, Shogun to earn that respect.
Whereas Fitch's best win is over Thiago Alves coming off of a back surgery and a tough weight-cut.

Fitch is kind of like Mark Munoz in that they win very ugly, so it's hard to think there isn't a shit ton of guys that can beat him.
I still remember Fitch's last fight prior to getting GSP. Chris Wilson, who was a newcomer to the UFC, gave him all he could handle and ended the fight with a semi-deep triangle choke. Wilson has lost 3 of 4 fights since then, but he gave Fitch a hellova fight. Also, his win over Diego Sanchez wasn't definitive at all. Not that Diego isn't good, but he isn't towards the top.

Rashad's got a pretty good resume. He basically killed Liddel's chin, beat Forrest when he was at his peak, beat Thiago Silva and Rampage. not many guys can match that

Unfortunately he is boring hence why the UFC seems to be reluctant to have him continually face top 10 competition.
Like "Decision" Dan, Fitch used to be known as "29-28" around the forums. No matter who he faced, it seemed he'd drop a round. It stands to reason why people have had trouble accepting him as the 2nd best, when some guys that aren't ranked had close fights with him.
Styles make fights, but remember the beating Diego Sanchez threw Diaz on his way out the UFC? When the b-list kings are working you over, it says something. Daley is another guy who's a solid middle-of-the-pack b-lister who Diaz had some real problems with. If these are the guys you struggle with, you are not top of the food chain.

I already think his record speaks for himself and he deserves the #2 mark. However, I understand those who say he isn't because he hasn't fought "top competition". How the fuck is that his fault though? Get Joe Silva and Dana to put him up against Condit & Ellenburger & fucking Kampmann, and not Happy Beard Guy after drawing against Penn.
Fitch is a good fighter, but there's no way he should be ranked as the consensus #2 in the world. He needs to beat someone like Ellenberger/Condit/MacDonald to legitimize his place in the division.
Joe Silva is probably skittish about matching Fitch up with a big name since it's almost a guarantee they'll produce a boring fight.
The huge problem with Fitch is that he'll be able to hold down a lot of guys in lackluster fights and derail other contenders, which in the long run, makes him THE #1 contender......But GSP's ability in the wrestling department makes for a bad style matchup for him, which magnifies GSP's striking pedigree. If Jon Fitch can really improve in his striking, he can become a much more dangerous fighter and could give GSP a better fight....but it will be tough for him given the fact that GSP is also continuously working on his own striking.
I feel bad for Fitch because he spent a lifetime learning a skill that is helping him as much as it is hurting him. It will be tough for him to shed his wrestling instincts. It's considered a "good thing" that he can severely blanket guys, so he doesn't feel bad about it. I remember reading an article where he talked about guys complaining about his style of fight and basically said "too fucking bad"......
