Jones Made Classic GNP Mistake Last Night

First off, I thought Jones looked amazing and I expected him to look that way.  I've been following this kid's career since before the UFC and he is destined for greatness imo.

But when he was on top of Hamill, he made a classic mistake.  He wanted to show the ref that he was overwhelming his opponent on the ground and looking for a stoppage for that reason.

But refs are not going to stop the fight unless you are landing meaningful shots.  Going ballastic on the guy and just hitting arms is a good way to wear yourself out.

Hamill was hurt after the slam, but if he wasn't and had lasted through the first round, he may have been a lot fresher than Jones.

Refs will not stop fights now due to positional dominance unless you are cracking the guy's face real good.  Don't waste your energy on his arms looking for a quick stoppage.

Bummer that Jones lost on a DQ, but he should be very proud of his performance.

i would agree...

but florian-lauzon fight was less damaging and was stopped... supposedly because lauzon would not be able to escape the mount.

I was hating on Jones pretty fierce on Friday.

The guy is damn talented.  I was a big fan of his style, he looked a lot like Genki Sudo.  I actually felt bad for him for getting the DQ.

I also thought he should have been much more selective when throwing those shots from the mount.

ttt

 CZ is correct.

Most of those shots were blocked, missed, or barely grazed Hamill.

I thought it should have been a NC

Good post. I would rather throw accurate, controlled strikes there and land 1 or 2 precise shots than 10 or 20 flailing punches that are blocked, miss, or just graze. Just looking busy there should never be enough to warrant a stoppage.
