As in the NFL combine style athleticism that people on here are obsessed with. His brothers may be in the NFL but Jones does not possess this kind of athleticism himself
This is a 6'4" inch guy with a giant wingspan who cant slam dunk a basketball . Smaller fighters who are not viewed as athletic like Carwin and Cro Cop can.
People will always talk about fighters , Gracies for example, as not being athletic enough to succeed at that top as if being "athletic" is the be all and end all in fighting. Jones is living proof that immeasurables like Chin, how one picks up skills/fight intelligence, mental toughness under pressure etc are far more important than leaping ability or bench pressing.
Outside of combat sports Jones athleticism is completely unremarkable yet he is the best fighter in the world reaching levels that more accomplished athletes were not capable of.
He is living proof that the NFL combine style athleticism people constantly refer to is irrelevant when it comes to fighting. Lets never speak of it again.
Ian Paisley? Yeah because he was a real nice man.
HUH? When Jones threw those flying knees to the body on DC he looked like a video game. I don't care if Jones can't dunk a basketball or what anyone says about that, Jones is one of the most athletic fighters I have ever seen
I lost a SN bet
Ian Paisley is my hero - I lost a SN bet
Ha. Fair enough.
Infact I'd say Jon Jones could be considered a poster boy for athleticism. Side kicks to the legs in the clinch, flying knees, spinning elbows, manhandling other very athletic fighters.

So you have your own definition of athleticism?

I guess.

No that just makes him a great fighter.
Americans are obsessed with "athletes" and it poisons every aspect of their mind when it comes to sports.
What has Jones done that would be considered athletic that would be measurable in the NFL combine?
He definitely cant jump high. Has he ever been a fast sprinter? Any weightlifting accolades?
Not being able to even come close to slam dunking at his size would be evidence of having below average athleticism, certainly among professional athletes
Is dunking a basketball how we judge athleticism these days? He dominates proven and tested world class elite fighters, does that not count for something? The guy is 6'4 and shredded with amazing agility, strength, and endurance.
Athleticism:
1. Of or befitting athletics or athletes.
2. Characterized by or involving physical activity or exertion
3. Physically strong and well-developed; muscular
4.*or can dunk a basketball.
i kinda disagree. i think vertical jump is known measure of someones athleticism according to the nfl combine... well jones can't jump for shit and can't dunk. he has chicken legs. if he squat and put 10lbs onto his legs hed probably dunk easy and his "athleticism" rating would go up considerably. he probably couldn't make 205 though. you can be athletic and fight or non-athletic and fight... it can be a sport or a fight or both.
When people talk about athleticism they often do so through a very narrow spectrum. The best marathon runner in the world would probably do terrible at the NFL Combine despite the fact he is a great athlete with inherent natural gifts.

Your taking the definition of athleticism to a whole 'nother level.... And u just dissed an entire country because your definition of athleticism is different than others.
I don't even know what in the hell were arguing about. But I'm pretty sure when someone manhandles Chael Sonnen, or throws all kinds of spinning shit that 99% of the rest of MMA fighters are INCAPABLE of throwing, that's called being above the curve athletically....
....and I'm still confused
The combine is a great measure of athleticism FOR FOOTBALL. It is not the one and only definitive measure of all kinds of athleticism. For example visual acuity is a key measure for baseball but has no relevance at all in say sprinting or swimming. Every sport has different metrics for "athleticism."
Jones is a freak athlete for mma. Its irrelevant whether he is a good athlete for football, baseball, or cricket.
he is more skilled than athletic
compared to adrian peterson, he is N average athlete.
Jones 40 time is probably around 5.00-5.10 peterson is a 4.3 guy
Peterson benched 225 30 times Jones Probably around 15-20
Peterson had a 40 inch vertical Jones probably around 20 inch
Jones is more skill, with all his wrestling, and leverage. His boxing also doesnt look fluent
Is there a standardized test to rate 'athleticism' for other sports? I honestly don't know, I don't watch anything other than combat sports. So if you can jump high, or run fast, or etc., you're athletic? That's sounds completely irrelevant for MMA imo. Mixing sports and how they rate their athletes physical abilities is not an accurate measure for MMA athleticism. Bring over a basketball player, put his 4' vertical leaping ass in the cage, and when he gets put on his back and pounded, it can be attributed to his lack of athleticism in MMA.
Should we judge Ray Rice's athleticism as a football player cus he has a mean left hook?
Cro Cop can dunk?
Yes I've seen the video, but if you really believe Jon jones can't dunk a basketball you are an absolute idiot. 84.5 inch reach on a 6'4 frame? If he jumped half as high as he does for a flying knew he'd be able to easily dunk with two hands. Just do the math idiots. That video was a stunt. I bet of someone said to him right now either dunk or deliver the belt to cormiers house, he'd dunk easily.
