There's a difference between "pulling guard" (i.e. transitioning from standup to guard) and escaping from a bottom position to the guard (and then perhaps getting a top position and/or standup).

Unfortunately that is true. On the other hand, I thought you could become use judo against an inexperienced person in about 6 months to a year pretty effectively, or am I wrong?

I think if you have a cool nerve then under 6 to 12 months you can use judo effectively against someone clueless.
