Legal ramifications of Starnes fight

This was suggested to me after the Kalib Starnes fight. I am posting it here because I am no expert, and think it deserves discussion.

There was a betting line on the Starnes/Quarry fight, much like there is in professional boxing or other professional sports.

It could be argued that Starnes unwillingness to engage could constitute "throwing" the fight.

If he did deliberately "throw" the fight, which has been cause for legal action in other sports, could their be civil or criminal ramifications for Starnes??

If Oliver McCall didn't get in trouble, no one ever will

they don't care about throwing the fight, because the bookies make money either way

I dont think you can say what he did was "throwing" a fight.

maybe if he bet $$$ on Quarry and it was proven, there may be some legal ramifcations

I dont know about "criminal" charges, but yes on civil lawsuit. It would be damn near impossible to prove it, so forget about it.

he didnt throw the fight. if he had and admitted it...he would be totally screwed

I think that was a drug induced emotional breakdown.

I remember Lewis being so surprised by it he couldnt even capitalize and put him away.

I don't have a quote, but wasn't there some type of admission by Starnes that he had efused to engage as a sort of protest to low payment and oppressive contracts for fighters. A good attorney might turn that into an admission.

Sounds like he admitted to throwing the fight to me.

Like if a football quarterback says he purposely missed all of his passes to make a point. Isn't that throwing the game?

I really don't care about what Kalib did. He should have lost points for not engaging for so long, or just been DQed. What is more on my mind is the lack of good sportsmanship from lots of fighters lately. There is no need to do anything extra do bring attention to the actions of your opponenet. If you flip off your opponent or taunt him or talk trash, you should be warned and penalized. That goes for both fighters in that fight. Just go out there and fight with honor and respect. If the guy runs away, tell the ref to take a point is the most you should do. If not engaging is a foul or penalty, the ref should be the one to decide if he should take action.

If the sport ever wants to be a high level event ala NBA or NFL, the behavior in the ring should rise to that level. By having more class and not dancing or doing any antics during the fight. Hype yourself up before the fight, and dance after you win, but not during the fight. We pay people to watch them fight, if you want to dance around or run away, you should be dqed for unsportsmanlike conduct or they should penalize you for not fighting. It's one thing to run to survive for a minute, it's another to run for 3 rounds when you never enganged from the start. If I was reffing the Quarry/Starnes fight, Kalib would have been penalized at least twice in every round, making him lose 30-18.

Absolutely not. That was complete bullshit. He was never on a radio show and said no such thing. That was a made up fairy tale on the internet
