I have no idea but maybe his guard is fire and his top game is at a much lower level? He was swept immediately both times he was on top so maybe that is the rationale. clearly he has a world class guard and can compete at the highest levels and that is a black belt to me but I'm not his coach nor a black belt so wgaf about what I think
This guy is the biggest sandbagger ever. One year he almost double grand slammed. That means he won weight and absolute at Pans,Brazileros, and Europeans. Then he won his weight at Worlds, won his matches at Absolute at Worlds then lost in the finals to a flying Triangle to najmi. Then he STAYS at Purple a whole other year so he could double Gold at Worlds which he did.
Five experience divisions is far too many. It should be white, blue and purple+. That way you can give someone a purple belt when they're ready to compete with whoever and save brown and black belt for when they learn to teach/develope proper warrior spirit /rep out some Gracie™ Gun Defence/open a large enough affiliate.

So wouldn't this be his instructors bad then? Who is his instructors?
Usually if a competitor double Golds at Pans,Brazilieros, OR Europeans, that guy gets promoted at the podium or definitely after Worlds that year regardless of how they do.But this dude WON a stacked division at WORLDS,got SILVER in the Absolute, then stayed at Purple a whole other year to double Gold at Worlds.Honestly, I blame IBJJF.Placing at a major, a competitor shouldn't be allowed to compete at that belt at that tournament IMO. They should have to compete at the next belt.

I believe it is Mario Reis. Often instructors sandbag because of pressure from the student or to be able to market having a successful student. The thing is, Sandbagging almost always hurts the student in the end. Many of the most successful BBs actually went through the belts quickly.

You could still have 5 levels of competition, but just call it beginner, intermediate, advanced, whatever. If you win your division, next time round you have to move up to the next level. Would take care of all this sandbagging

Sir Taps - This is the problem with using a martial arts grading system within a sport. Clearly Meregali can compete at the top level within the sporting confines of BJJ, but his instructor (perhaps) feels that in the martial art aspects of BJJ, he still has to develop.

Well or more generally people get held back so they have a shot at winning every title at every belt.
i remember a brown belt Rodolfo beating braulio too...
taekwondo, karate and judo somehow manage to be sports and martial arts and not let subjective notions of what a black belt is and isn't restrict sporting talent.
sambo and wrestling take the strip of cloth out of the equation and put talent and ability front and centre.
what makes bjj so special?
I was hoping that there might be a better reason than "get lots of medals"...
