Lytes Out - Deep Dive: UFC 1 Series: Ken "TWMDM" Shamrock

I will. I know he’s said the sparring at Lion’s Den took a toll on his brain, getting knocked in the head too much.

He just had a baby recently, and he’s doing great

Awesome that’s good he’s doing well, who knows how far the team would go if they didn’t train so crazy

I’m a big fan of Jerry’s. I’m an underdog myself so I always looked up to him. He’s a tough motherfucker.

I have reached out to him through other people

His concerns
He doesn’t want the interview to be used against him in court

My response
1 Anything that was crazy and boarding on illegal activities will not be brought up

  • there is so much cool stuff with his career that we don’t need a Galindo type interview

2 anything police related will not be brought up

3 if he wants something edited out, I will give him 3 weeks to tell me prior to publish

He is a dream interview.

Our Delucia interview

  • Jason gies deep into training practices and mentions that there may have been some motives of jealousy

In our Frank interview, he all but confirms this

Ha! What is a old brero?

I too was a big Bohlander fan after the guts he showed at UFC 8. After he won the fist under 200lb tournament and then armbared Kevin Jackson, he seemed destined to be champion but he really seemed to fall off. He lost a lot of fans after his preflight statements before fighting Tito. Saying he was going in with a win already, etc. All the class and humility he showed before was gone and he pretty much got ran over by Tito. There’s no shame in that but he really embarrassed himself with how arrogant he was.

It’s interesting to wonder what would have happened if he’d continued in UFC 11 and fought Tank and Coleman. I think at the top of his game, he had a chance.

In a brand new sport you saw Jerry make a lot of adjustments physically

Prior to the Tito fight I believe that was his attempt at leveling up mentally

It definitely didn’t come across well

With that said I believe that his fight with Ferozzo is hall of fame worthy

iirc jerry was fighting at 185 pounds, saying he was 195, against guys who cut to 200

I’m digging pretty far into my memory here but I THINK Bohlander was Vitor Belfort’s original opponent for Ultimate Brazil. Wanderlei was a pretty damn good replacement but the locals didn’t want to see two Brazilians fighting each other.

Bolander was awesome and very highly skilled. To me he was the best proof of how good the lIons den training was in those days. Watching him against Tito it was very apparent that they were two very different sized humans. Him vs Ferrozo was an oddity that deserves the same level of awe that Keith Hackney vs Emmanuel Yarbrough still commands, except Ferrozo was probably a tougher opponent than Yarbrough (although I realize that Yarbrough actually had some very legitimate skill).

One of my favorite of the early UFCs.

Bohlander with the gutsy/skilled performance.
Highlight reel debuts of Goodridge and Frye.
Shamrock/Kimo Super fight.

Great event.

Speaking of UFC 8, I’m not the kind of guy who accuses fights of being fixed lightly but Kimo/Ken looks suspicious. Check out this gif. Kimo had a good ground game from training with Joe Moreira but he gave Ken his arm and left himself wide open for punches. Not only does Ken hesitate but he just seems to give up dominant position. Well, he was going for the back but still.

That was before kimo did much training with gorilla joe. His first post gorilla joe fight was varleans

Failed back take imo. Doesn’t make sense that he won but gave up a position if it was fixed.

Ken said after the fight he purposely avoided throwing punches to conserve energy. He wanted to finish with a submission.

The bad position was just a mistake – partly due to overconfidence maybe?

Excellent interview, finished it on the drive home from work just now. I know Ken is very controversial in MMA but he was always one of my favorites.

I like how he goes back and forth between being cocky and being humble.

Not joking, I like that.
