UFC 1 ring announcer Rich Goins welcomed the a brand new sport into our homes that would change the direction of our lives. Our UFC 1 October would NOT be complete without the legendary voice of Rich Goins joining us. This interview was NOT an easy one to get and we hope that you appreciate it as much as we do.

Awesome! I used to listen to the G-man regularly as a bit player (maybe a producer?) on a morning radio show called Lewis & Floorwax every morning during my commute or at a job site working construction. Those guys were fight fans and regularly talked boxing and even mma on a morning FM jock type show.

I wish the G Man had stuck around. He’s better than marble mouth Buffer and all his screeching.

After listening to the interview, which I enjoyed, I would say that it seems that the Gman lacked candor on a few topics.

First, I don’t believe he knows who Eric Paulson is based on the context of his answer. I also don’t believe that he knows about the history of Pat Smith post UFC.

With that said, the interview was really good, particularly hearing about Pat Smith in the Sabaki Challenge days, hearing about some of the venues such as mammoth gardens (which actually did host concerts, he was mistaken about that) and hearing about Tabk in the crowd (undoubtedly drunk af) and the cage being rigged shut with a cheap Kmart belt after it was busted through by Yarborough.

All in all he was a very good guest because he’s like an eye witness who is untainted by historical revisionist history. He obviously doesn’t follow modern mma and isn’t really into martial arts (despite apparently training briefly in Muay Thai). In that way his perception is more pure than most people because with some coaxing, he really is able to view the events of the first UFCs through the lens he did in the era they transpired.

To me in the interview he came off as a real fan, which I thought was cool.

I thought it was a great episode. Like you guys said it was a pretty pure interview since he doesn’t have any stakes in the current game or anything that would prevent him from his honest answers to history.

I think the other side of that is that because he was honest but recalling way back and doing it as someone who was there and not as a historian like fan covering it that some of it was a little foggy.

One example was he said his last UFC was 8 in Puerto Rico but it looks like it might have been UFC 11 in Georgia.

Tons of great insight though like how he said he knew Tuli was going to get roughed up by Gerard. Good to see he his doing well too and getting paid to Golf now. That’s a nice retirement plan.
