For years I thought that was a work.
But honestly now, I don’t think it was. I think Ken was just 60+ pounds bigger and is known as freakishly strong for his weight.
I think Matt got tired and frustrated, and that’s how Ken hit that crazy suplex guillotine counter. Ken drilled that a lot actually, it’s on one of his old VHS instructionals. I’ve used it a few times in the gym, usually against the cage
In the match there are several moments where you can see the frustration on his face after the rope escapes. He was a better grappler than Ken, but Ken was good enough that the size and strength disparity made the difference.
I could be wrong. That’s just my take now as someone who is on the smaller side of black belts and has rolled and competed with giant jacked dudes.
Idr which match or organization it was specifically, but ken was asked about works on his Lytes Out appearance and said something like, “That’s business and I’m not going to talk about someone’s business.”
Am i remembering that correctly? His answer seemed to me anyway to confirm worked “fights”.
I think the most likely thing is what Delucia said a long time ago.
The works weren’t bidirectional. In the Pancrase works it was mostly Ken, Funaki and Suzuki carrying or putting over guys they thought would be good for business. They saw it as investing in their org, which makes sense to me.
The idea being they would sometimes let guys like Bas work more or even win if they thought it was good for the industry.
