The odds are stacked against Mark Hunt heading into UFC 180 this weekend, but he’s been beating them all his life.
Hunt was born into a large Mormon family in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1974. The future world champion had a troubled childhood and started running away from home at the age of eight. The anger that threatened to consume him in his youth led to two stints behind bars, both times for violent crimes. Soon after his second release from jail, Hunt was involved in an incident with massive ramifications. As the story goes, he was caught up in a dispute outside a local pub in Auckland. Within seconds, several of his antagonists had been knocked out cold in a brutal eruption of frustration. One of the bouncers at the pub that night owned a kickboxing gym and he took Hunt under his wing. The next week, he won his first bout by knockout.
Backed into a corner, literally and figuratively, Hunt had found a way out.
