Memorable Moments in New England MMA

I have been out of the fight game for almost a year now due to various reasons, so I decided to reflect a bit on how awesome the New England MMA scene has been over the years.

The following is a list of what I feel are the top ten most memorable moments in NE MMA. Feel free to add or argue. It was a tough list to compile, and I'm sure I missed something somewhere.

The 10 Most Memorable Moments in New England MMA

10) Because it was such a fantastic idea, the number 10 spot goes to Jerry Spiegel, one of the most prolific and well-liked fighters in New England (and everywhere), making his ring entrance to “It’s Raining Men.”

9) This spot is a tie for two very historic firsts:

Tim Sylvia records the first KO in Rhode Island at Rhode Island Vale Tudo 1 way back in 1999.

Joe Pomfret, head of the extremely successful RSD/Team Aggression, records the first ever KO in Mass Destruction history (at MD 2) by way of head kick.

8) Although relatively recent and subject to debate, I list Bobby McMaster’s overtime KO over Bobby Dias as number 8. I can’t really explain it, but this straight right hand down the center was so pure that it captured the essence of everything that is MMA.

7) Lance Everson, working for a takedown on Greg Brown, drove him into the ropes and collapsed Kipp Kollar’s patented octagon ring, forcing a no contest and an end to this Mass Destruction event.

6) Alex Karalexis, a relative newcomer at the time, knocked off long time Mass Destruction champion Ted Govola (undefeated in New England) with a vicious right hook.

5) Number 5 goes to the World Fighting League’s 8-man tournament. Scrappy challenger Doug Brown made a name for himself as he recorded two consecutive knockouts on his way to the finals. But if seeing that wasn’t enough to satisfy you, the crowd also got to watch Joe Lauzon tear through the competition en route to the championship, winning two fights by submission and one by brutal slam.

4) The never-give-up attitude is the theme behind number 4. Sitting comfortably in mounted position on John Howard, Mandela Kponou sat up and gave the crowd the infamous “throat slash” gesture, then got caught in a very slick heel hook.

3) It isn’t necessarily “MMA,” but Sean Gannon’s underground victory over renowned streetfighter Kimbo Slice is one of the most talked-about fights ever, creating more internet buzz than many UFC events.

2) Bobby Dias defeated the legendary Warren “Giant Lee” Mayonne via head kick. I had to put this as number 2 on the list because Giant Lee, through his outrageous claims of grandiosity, has reached an absolutely legendary status among New England fight fans, extending far beyond that of Matty Mo, and only a slight second to Chuck Norris.

1) Call me biased towards the little guys, but I say Jim Clifford’s overhook flying armbar over Paul Gorman for the WFL title is number 1. It is still hands down the best submission in New England history, and on a par with some of the best ever.

jerry speigel is a trip. he came out and fought in the Combat-Do Challenge a couple times and cracked me up

great list. was lucky enough to witness most of these events

Marcus Davis' epic stand-up war with Thiago Alves needs to be in there somewhere. Quite possibly one of the sickest fights ever on New England soil.

Mike Campbell's four-second head kick KO against Justin Hammerstrom for the Reality Fighting 170-pound title.

Are we forgetting Louis Hicks?

Go New England MMA! :D

 ttt

I was fighting at untamed with Jerry and in my virginity caused me to be shocked when he was drinking a beer on the warm-up mat.  While stretching for a fight.  Jerry is one of the nicest and most likable guys in New England MMA.

TTT for Jerry.

"6) Alex Karalexis, a relative newcomer at the time, knocked off long time Mass Destruction champion Ted Govola (undefeated in New England) with a vicious right hook."

This was my favorite and I'm glad it made your list. I am also biased, considering Mr. Karalexis will be serving as the best man in my wedding in a few months, but nevertheless, that was a huuuuuuge upset at the time! I remember everyone telling Alex he had no chance in that fight.

Peterson, good call on Davis/Alves.  The other two you mentioned aren't exactly associated with a positive image of the sport, so I left them out.  Besides, as awesome as it was, Campbell's head kick KO has been repeated several times, like the TKOReilly's record-breaking KO against Rich Mitchell, and the more recent Grispi win over Paige for the Untamed title.

I'm sure there could be an entire thread, or book, made to commemorate Spiegel moments.  My favorite one was the time he tore the shirt off of the viKtOry fightwear kid's back.  The dude was wearing some torn up tee-shirt that apparently had sentimental value to him, and with a remarkable lack of hesitation Spiegel just snuck up behind him and ripped it off.

What about Jorge Rivera beating Tim Sylvia at the 2nd Rhode Island Vale Tudo?

That was a ridiculous size mismatch...and the crowd loved it when Jorge hit that armbar!

Karalexis KOing Govola was huge. I remember my jaw dropping when it happened. Govola kept hitting his own shots, but that overhand right from Alex kept coming. It eventually connected and Ted said goodnight.

Good call on Alves/Davis. Of all the local fights I've seen, that was the best. Karalexis/Littlefield was #2 and also deserves mention.

What about Lauzon over Mike Brown?

Keith Rockel being the first local fighter to make it to the UFC?

Lance Everson almost killing the boxing commission when he woke up after his match with Boca de Oliveira?

How about Diekman and Schultz finally fighting and ending their bad blood.

Don't ask me why, but for whatever reason I forgot to think back through Team Elite's history.  Yeah, I'm a complete idiot.  I'll accept a FAIL stamp for that.

Lauzon over Brown was huge at the time, but I guess I lost perspective since he's done so much more since then.  Plus I wasn't a true J-Lau jockrider until he gave Antoine Skinner a pat on the head after triangling him with a busted knee.

The Lance re-awakening was pretty cool, but my second-favorite Uncle Mike Littlefield saved the day by wrapping him up in guard pretty quickly.

This thread needs more Kneebahs.

nice list

I remember that Lance bout against Boca--I was just talking about that the other day.

If I'm not mistaken that was the same night JLau and JZ went at it.

Are we forgetting about Fickett vs Florian? I wasn't on-site for that one, but based on all that I've read--and considering it was the fight that got Kenny on TUF--it was one for the ages.

Matt Peterson - I remember that Lance bout against Boca--I was just talking about that the other day.

It was the night of the JZ-J-Lau rematch. Their first match was the same night that Davis fought Alves.

Great call on Doug Brown's amazing night. I remember thinking he was the only one who didn't belong in the tournament at the time.

I remember going NUTS at ringside when he knocked out Machado. I think I practically jumped in the ring.
