one of the founders of sambo: Jigoro Kano

Oshcepkov studied at the Kodokan and was a judo 2nd dan

the 'other founder' of sambo was Viktor Spiridonova. after helping found sambo, Spiridonov was imprisoned by the Soviets as a Japanese spy - he wasn't, he simply refused to deny Judo's influence on the art in the hostile anti-Japanese era of pre-war USSR
