Well after 10 years of a little submission wrestling and a whole lot of doing nothing I'm officially back in the gi.
I absolutely hated the gi when I started training nearly 12 years ago and I was one of those guys who didn't see a need for the gi for MMA.
But our school owner has brought in a BJJ instructor and although we've been training no gi for the past 4 or 5 months the instructor came over to our gym full time and started offering gi classes. So I've been back in the gi for just a few training sessions and I absolutely love it.
I've been back training seriously for about 6 months and I'm loving it. This is the longest I've went in a long time without burning out or just getting lazy.
I've dropped from 240# to 205 and quit lifting weights and have focused on my grappling and I haven't felt this good in years.
I'm focusing on making my training fun and not taking myself too serious.
Yeah, I used to not like the Gi either, but I came back to it after getting years of No Gi experience and I appreciate it much more.
I just recently joined a school that has gi classes after training nogi/mma for the last 12 or so years. I did not bother putting my two white stripes on my belt (acquired at a bjj school in 1997). This new gym offers mma and kickboxing classes as well but I find myself going to a lot more gi classes.
I never really thought much of the gi. I can tell you that after rolling a lot in the gi I feel about a 100 times faster when I go no gi. Sure not everything translates to mma but I do not care and now I am considering competing in this damn thing.
If my only concern was mma I do not know that I would do gi. I do not htink it is necessary to get good at grappling to wear a gi. However if you can escape an armbar while wearing one then nogi is a piece of cake. Also keeps you mentally aware-in no gi you do not have to worry about the noose you are wearing that can really be taken advantage of. While rolling in gi I find myself really focusing and executing techniques much more fluidly. A lot less slop I guess is what I am getting at.
I join you in your "MyGod this Gi!" mentality though.
Yeah, keeping track of gi submissions and universal submissions is the same kind of attention you need to keep track of strikes and submissions in MMA.
I am with you, when I first started I really thought the gi was silly, but after really taking it serious for the past couple of years I really have alot of fun with it now. It just adds so much more to the game. Although NOGI is still fun as well.
great thread. Good luck in your training.
Thanks for all the support.
I'm really interested in the gi as a way for me to train as I get older so I can train with my kids. Right now they are doing boxing and when I can I work with them on no gi stuff but we are probably going to invest in a couple of gi's this summer.
My wife is turning into an animal with the gi so I'm loving that as well.
It's good to train as a family.
wish I could get my wife interested.. lol..
I just went back to my old BJJ school after a few years away from there.
I am SO glad to be training gi again.
I was at a few smaller places that were all no-gi and mma training. I really have no interest in mma as I dont plan on fighting all that much and none of these younger guys there wanted to hear anything about the gi.
As someone who started training with it I firmly believe it makes you better.
And mule im 240 right now hoping to get back down to the 205 I have been and should be.
And.. my god I love this gi.
Just as long as you remember to wash it regularly. It's great isn't it?
nogi only is for cock faggot
You have so many more options and control with the Gi. We mainly train Gi,but since it has got warmer we added a no-gi class and man I forgot how slippery and different it is. Puddles of sweat everywhere. It's amazing how much sweat a gi holds!
BEEF & CHEESE - nogi only is for cock faggot
