GSP kinda beat the UFC. He walked away champ, came back for and won a title and then did not defend. UFC was not thrilled about either situation.
The UFC would rather former champs go out like JDS instead of GSP. JDS lost to two future champs, a top 5 ranked fighter and a top 10 ranked fighter on his way out in his last four fights and then they cut him as he was expensive.
UFC would much rather build new stars on the backs of old stars than let old stars walk about on top like GSP and Khabib.
UFC’s objective is not have things end like they did with Khabib, GSP and Ngannou even if that is what was best for the fighter.

Nunes went out on top too and UFC kept a shitty empty division alive for her second belt and she had some of the least viewed title fights in modern UFC history. Nunes did pretty good for herself with that deal compared to the promotion too. They kept a fake division alive for her and she got to pretend to be a real two weight champ.
