Overeems style of striking

All the people on here talking shit on Alistairs striking and K1 in general....did you even watch the GP and can you even evaluate stand up?

He has one style in K1. He stalks guys down, takes a TON of shots on his gloves then unloads a combo and because he has so much power gets the job done. He over powers guys.

What he did to win the K1 gp he will not be able to do as effectively in MMA because of all the other variables. He was caught flat footed by Fabricio because he was so unpredictable, butt flopping one minute and striking the next so took punches he wouldnt normally.

Alistair is by far not the most technical striker in K1 or even MMA but he is one of the smartest and hardest hitting. If anyone doubts his chin they should watch the Tyrone Sponge fight. His one problem is he gets caught flat footed and it was like that back in Pride. He is not light on his toes. One thing is for sure, a fight with Dos Santos would look completely different and anyone could take it.

great appraisal

So you're saying in mixed martial arts he isn't as good?  Shocker.

VERY good post TS, 100% agree.

Sunnyko, yeah, op JUST SAID THAT.^ Phone Post

irishrottie has claimed teh correct once again. Good post.

Werdum has made anyone he fought look bad except for one time when he showed up 20 pounds overweight because he thought he was fighting a brazilian bum

Exactly. The Reem is an animal with enough power and strength to take punishment easily and destroy men.

I think you missed that although he gassed a bit, he knew it and played the fight safe enough to win. In the K1 he has killer instincts, in his fight with Werdum, he backed off and did the intelligent thing.

TRO11er - Overrated IMO <img src="/images/phone/post_tag.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

THAT

Gokudamus stole my name - Werdum has made anyone he fought look bad except for one time when he showed up 20 pounds overweight because he thought he was fighting a brazilian bum

Exactly, he isn't a Brett Rogers. Werdum is top ten and a horrible fight for anyone...

sunnyko - People fail to see his superb defense, and technique. If you watch all of ubereems fights he takes those slaps to his biceps and gloves then comes back to destroy motha fuckas <img src="/images/phone/post_tag.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

I agree with the caveat that given that he's a counter striker that's how he fights stylistically. It's not that it wont work in MMA, it's just that your defense is a little trickier given the size of the gloves, etc.

I got into an unfriendly with DaemonDragon when trying to convey this. It's very hard to explain for me, but I agree with your point.

Normally, great kickboxers in MMA or those who crossed over have the more traditional style of standing upright and snapping off quick and tight, high volume combinations. Or, just watch K-1 and imagine that style in MMA, kinda like an early Bang Ludwig.

Think about Overeem's MMA HL reel -- which I actually started making after researching this topic -- and you don't really see the traditional kickboxing combinations. He rarely throws more than two strikes at a time, and almost everything is keyed off his left knee. Traditionally, a lot of jabs and low kicks are thrown to both measure and protect distance. Overeem rarely throws a jab.

In K-1, he was successful because he transferred the raw brutality from MMA to it. He would just walk people down, get in close, and just maul them with monster hooks that blew right through their guard or bullied them in the clinch.

While that's a benefit in K-1, having that style in MMA, especially against a grappler who wants to take him down, getting in close and tangling is not a wise thing to do. Now, factor in that most of Werdum's TDs come from the clinch rather than shooting singles or doubles from outside, and Overeem could benefit from adding the more traditional kickboxing style and using footwork, his reach, and his power from a distance, ala' Chuck Liddell's style.

This is all just my opinion, of course. I would guess that Overeem's left knee alone accounted for almost 70-80% of his MMA wins. If they didn't finish the fight, they set it up.
