Questions about sweeps in Muay Thai

Hi all,

Just wondering if I can get some clarification about sweeps in Muay Thai. Are the sweeps in 0:52 and 2:18 legal in Muay Thai?

I am not super well versed in muay thai rules... but why wouldn't they be? Because of how the arms are tied up? I would guess they are legal.

I always thought these would be regarded as judo/ wrestling throws which are illegal. To make these sweeps legal in Muay Thai you'd have to make contact with the instep or Upper side of the foot/ leg to make it a "kick". This makes it less effective than using the sole of the foot hence probably why it's not as commonly seen in Muay Thai when. Compared to sanshou/ sanda.

But looks like from the video I'm wrong.

They are legal. What is not legal are sweeps when your calves touch the opponents calves like inside and outside leg reaps. Hip toss of course are not legal.

I've never gotten a lot of clarity on this stuff as all my "Muay Thai coaches" were usually teaching in the context of mma so this part was muddied.

Even when I fought Muay Thai I was kinda learning the rules mid fight.

My go to is an outside trip... so if that's no good then what about a knee tap using my own knee. Like I pull his hips into mine, get him light on his feet and hit him on the outside of his knee with the inside of mine?

The knee/thigh/hip thing is fine. Just remember the calf to calf thing and you will be ok. Basically all sweeps and throws that doesnt involve you following the opponent to the ground are usually fine.

Thanks Bigmovie. Much appreciated. I was hoping initially for forum experts Khun Khao or Lkmfdc to comment. I thought I'd be disappointed with lack of response but you came through. Big thanks again for the clarification. I guess they don't frequent this forum anymore. I'm getting too old.

Your wellcome. I've seen guys do the leg reaps though and get away with it.

Iron Monkey pretty much said it all, but in some areas (like here in Vancouver, BC) they used to want you to "kick" the leg out, and not use the instep/bottom of the foot. That said people do it and get away with it all the time.
