Chai Sirisute is a long-time student of Eddie Bravo and Rigan Michado, who earned his black belt from Bravo in 2014. He also founded 10th Planet Long Beach.
Note: This is not the Chai Sirisute who was instrumental in establishing Muay Thai in USA. Another note, Long Beach is, well, Long Beach.
Thus there was no surprise when a guy walked in off the street and randomly asked to fight. “Hey, can we break knuckles?” he asked enthusiastically. The reply was equally enthusiastic - “Whatever you want to do.”
What Happened
Comedy followed, well illustrating the remarkable power of jiu-jitsu to end a dojo storm with no one getting hurt. Sirisute level changes and blast doubles the challenger off the wall and onto the floor. In seconds the black belt establishes side control, moves to north south, and gets the tap from there, via choke.
As so often happens, the challenger cannot believe what happened, and tries his luck again. This time it’s a snatch double, guard pass, back take, and rear naked choke, again in just seconds. Again, no one is hurt.
The dojo stormer, now obviously impressed, says, “I give up,” and the pair hug.
Many martial arts claim to be about peace, but cannot in reality deliver. Aikido, for example, doesn’t work, so it’s not peaceful, it’s harmless. And other disciplines, including karate, boxing, and muay Thai, would have to bludgeon the challenger to establish that their approach is effective. Smashing someone’s face isn’t peaceful. Jiu-jitsu is the best approach to end a physical challenge with no harm done to either party.
And lastly, the video description unfairly describes the challenger as a thug. In reality, he was humble, respectful, and good-natured about the whole thing.
10th Planet Long Beach Today
The gym burned to the ground in 2020 during demonstrations following the tragic death of George Floyd. Sirisute and three friends stood armed in front of the business for five hours, keeping looters at bay, but when an incendiary device was thrown into an adjacent shop, the entire building burned down.
A GoFundMe was established to rebuild 10th Planet Long Beach, with an intended goal of $50,000. It raised $75,503 from 1,400 donations, and returned to business.
