100%, I honestly cant even fathom losing one of my kids. The shit Rickson gets for his career choices before that is what Ive seen 99% of the criticism about though.
Where is any proof of this anywhere though? Never even heard about it mentioned in an interview and Im sure one of them wouldve mentioned it

Here is the thing with Rickson…He was already 34 when UFC 1 happened and thats two years past when Khabib called it quits in terms of age. There was no money out there for him for fights in 93.
By 99 when things started to heat up in Japan he was 40.
Throughout the 90’s he was able to make huge money just with academies and seminars… there was money in maintaining his legend as being undefeated in BJJ, vale tudo/NHB and challenge matches.
Rickson was no more invincible in NHB than Coleman, Sperry, Bustamante, Renzo, Hendo etc… or anyone fighting and he knew that.
There was money in not fucking up his undefeated status and nobody offered him enough money to take the risk as he approached 40.
Its not like MMA was flourishing and people were offering him Conor money when he was 25 or 30.
NHB was not even called MMA until Rickson was already 40.
I do think he intended to fight Sak before his son died and I understand why he lost interest in that just as I understand why Khabib lost interest in going for 30-0 after his father died.

Yeah I’m not defending Rickson pre-Rockson’s death. I’m just saying you can’t expect the man to fight after something like that. If I lost my kiddo I’d be a broken shell of a man.

I assume he didn’t like the time limits and didn’t want to lose via points to someone like Sperry or Kerr.
I don’t think he was afraid of competing with them I just don’t think he liked the notion of the time limits and points as I recall he had issues with that stuff.
I’ve been down a rabbit hole this past year of reading MMA content, rewatching old events and listening to Lytes Out. Art Davie put it in his book that the no time-limit stipulation was a Gracie staple because they need time to “cook the guy” Problem is it’s boring as fuck to watch.

Vitor may have kept fighting with breaks, but it derailed his focus, efforts and career.
He had 2 victories is 6 matches over the next 2 years. If he didnt win his fight that occured just weeks after she disappeared via cut stoppage vs Couture for the belt, he would have 0 notable victories during this period of time. He dedicated the fight to his sister and had some pent-up frustrations he released on Randy all within the first round when the fight was stopped.
Just saying.
I dont blame Rickson’s decision, even though Saku vs Rickson would have been the fight to watch!

It’s been talked about many times over the years in articles and interviews. The 2000 event with Funaki was successful enough that it was being discussed for 2001. (No date had been set though). Rockson died in late 2000.
A quick google gives me this interview with GQ in 2021 to promote his autobiography. Rickson doesn’t talk about it directly but the interviewer states it in the article.

Eh, this just says the usual generic they were supposed to fight but Rockson died. Im talking specifically about there being contracts setup/a date set
I also completely understand Rickson not wanting to fight after his sons death, I cant fathom losing one of my kiddos. Sounds so fucking terrible
