RIP Gene! In recent years, I've watched the great fights involving Gene, Ray, and Basilio on ESPN Classics! Golden Era, catch those fights if you get the chance!
RIP
I was extremely fortunate to hang out with Gene a bunch of times at various boxing related events throughout the years.
Gene had a huge heart and a very engaging personality. He was one of those guys who had that unique, powerful aura of greatness.
One funny and admirable observation that I made at events that included autograph signings with fans:
We all know the fan-favorite photo poses with fighters, such as the "point my finger at the fighter" and the "fan fight stance". Well much like Carmen Basilio, Gene typically wouldn't put up with non-pros taking a fight stance photo with them. And when the fan would put up the fists, both Basilio and Gene Fullmer would quickly swat it down with highly impressive speed, even as they got much older.
They'd smile as they did it, but you could tell that they really meant to make a point that it didn't sit too well with them.
It might not translate well in text, but it always put a huge smile on my face when I'd see them do that.
Many thanks to Gene for being such a huge inspiration.
RIP Gene Fullmer
cool story brah!!!^^^
I'm shocked he was still alive!
RIP
He was probably the strongest middleweight ever. He was just massive.
Tough as nails also
No one fighting today fights as hard and tough as Gene Fullmer. He was sharp as a tack until the very end. May he rest in peace.
RIP
With former rival and fellow conquerer or the Great Ray Robinson, Carmen Basillio before Basillio's death in 2012. (Fulmer is on the right) <img src=http://cdn2-www.ringtv.craveonline.com/assets/uploads/2015/04/Basilio-and-Fullmer-Al-Bello-Getty-Images.jpg
RIP Gene Fullmer
Not enough hespect on this forum for the Man. He put his heart out there & finally passed on; at least give him a ttt or an rip.
RIP
TTT for a boxing legend. Rest in peace Mr. Fullmer.
I would probably put Gene around 8th or 9th on an all time greatest middleweight list.
