Romero "Jacare" Cavalcanti on OpenMatRadio

Good guest this time guys.

Another excellent interview by Open Mat Radio. Awesome job!

I have a funny Jacare story:

Emir, a brown belt under Rey, was visiting from Sweden during the ADCC in L.A. We were walking to our seats when we saw Jacare walking toward us. Emir stops him and asks for a picture. I'm ready to grab the camera to take a picture of Emir and Jacare, when Emir hands Jacare the camera and stands next to me so HE can take a picture of us! lol

If you know Emir, you know that there is no way he intended to offend Jacare, and Jacare took it so well (and actually took a great picture), but it was hilarious.

Awesome story!

Jacare talked a little about BJJ as a self defense art in this interview. Does your school teach self defense techniques? Mine does and actually I just learned some the other day lol Phone Post

I'm sure it was Jacare's honor to take your picture. Thanks for another great story and the continued support. How are things in Brazil?

(cheap plug, everyone check out our podcast with Andreh, it's my personal favorite www.openmatradio.com/2012/01/23/episode-4-andreh-anderson/ )

Open Mat Radio -  In the interview Jacare talked about a conversation with Carlinhos regarding a need for a rule change regarding double guard pulls.

What do you think about adding rules into jiu jitsu? Do they help being the sport back to its roots OR do more rules only create more problems (see Judo) ? <img border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;" alt="Phone Post" src="/images/phone/apple.png" />

I think that if you are looking at things from a strictly self defense perspective than the guy who pulls guard should be down an advantage. I think this would make bjj schools place a bigger emphasis on stand up. That being said it would probably hurt sport bjj because the guard is a very important aspect in sport bjj.

I think the rules right now are good, but for self defense a few rules can be modified.

1. Down an advantage for pulling guard.

2. Minus 1 point of you obtain side control, mount or knee on belly and get reversed.

This would help create better self defense practitioners.

I'm not sure about taking points away if you get reversed, but I understand where you're coming from
