Roy - Def positioning and escape..

Roy,

I've been using the tips on BJJ Over 40 DVD and they've been very helpful!

However I'm running into a situation where when I get mounted I will move into the defensive position but sometimes I'm too slow and before I can work the elbow escape my opponent will move into the side mount where he brings one knee up and places his heel against my hip and turns sideways and brings his knee behind my back. I believe this is mount control position #3 that you show on BJJ101 Vol2.

What's a good high percentage escape from this position?

You can probably tell that I've not been at this long. I've only been doing BJJ for about a month.

Thanks!

Chris,

When a person mounts on top of you and uses mount control position

3, you can still use a basic elbow/knee escape. However, the contact

points will be different. The contact points for your elbows will be his
upper and lower calf - rather than his hip and the inside of his knee.

Also, when someone is so new to BJJ, they must understand they will
undergo a lengthy period of time when they will be controlled and
dominated by senior students. There is no way around this fact. So, put
your time and understand that you are the new kid on the block and
you must go through this process. However, in a couple of years, the
seniors will have a more difficult time controlling you AND you will be
able to control many of the newbies that come and join the academy
where you train.

Good training to you,

Roy Harris

Thanks for the tip Roy!

I will say one thing, being 38 and grappling against powerful and explosive 20 year olds is not easy. Sometimes I start to think I'm getting too old for this but I'm still hanging on...
