I finally got offered to be a featured Groupon deal near the end of this month. I was wondering what others experienced with this as far as getting and retaining new clients.
Thanks

Not a school owner, but..
Going in, you should realize that a lot of people buying your groupon are only going to do it to try out this "mma thing" they keep hearing about. Those people are highly likely never to return after their groupon is up.
Hopefully they will be easy to pick out so you don't waste your time trying to keep them.
make sure it's a month unlimited classes and not a punch card style offer.
MMA won't sell as much as a fitness offer.
Make sure you read the fine print. Groupon and living socials customer service sucks because they know you need them. (LS is worse than groupon though)
give me a couple weeks and i will give you the results of torrance gracie's use of groupon
Not the owner, but when we had a groupon, we saw a TON of new people. Very few stayed, but we did get a few new guys that still pay.
So I would think its worth it
Groupon is loosing steam and willing to try anything that gets revenue. GEO marketing is a great idea, but Amazon Local is already better than Groupon.
If you are not a start up why not use your own platform? What Groupon is offering you is their reach. They have X amount of people that are in your area, they will push you to those people and only get paid if you sell something. You have the responsibility of setting up, servicing and retaining these new customers. As many noted above Groupon leads with price and that price goes up after the first 30 days and they grouponers never return.
Idea 1 -
Your members are your platform. Take the % that you are offering Groupon for this 30 day burst of business and develop a program for your current members. They will be your best sales team. Have them bring a friend, not for a free class but for 30 days. Give them a discount on every new member they bring in and allow them to give a discount to their friends and family to entice them to join.
The rest is on you and your staff to provide amazing service and experience.
Idea 2 - Use the Groupon to create a new stream of revenue for the gym. Take what you teach and create a class that encompasses what you teach but has mass appeal.
Like: Ladies Self Defense Class / Massage.
Partner with a local company that can bring in some masseuses and chairs. Class starts with a light rub down while you go over the basics. Once everyone is loose you do some basic self defense. Afterwards offer some wine and snacks.
The ladies in your class are decision makers in their household. Maybe she has told Junior you are not doing MMA, or told her boyfriend she likes his face too much to let him. Now all of a sudden they are meeting you, your team and realizing that this is not just for bikers and brawlers. They may join and bring the boyfriend and family with them.
Just think outside the box.
we did it once and it was a waste of time, gym just filled up with bargan shoppers who have no desire to really convert over to full time clients
Not a school owner but work for the school. We Did it and I personally hate it, drives some traffic but not really a lot with retention. More of a headache than anything else bc most groupon ppl (myself included when it comes to food) are already looking to haggle or make a deal. Like I said drives some traffic but IMO not worth the headache.

Thanks for the groupon. I will proceed with caution.

First I was like no way.
Then I was like probably not.
I'm now up to checking out the existing massage therapists in the facility.
Thanks
PS Then I checked out your site http://www.ingrainedmedia.com/
and I saw that your company does all the things I'm not good at doing for myself.
I've existed as a business since 2001 by word of mouth as my primary marketing tool.
I'm learning that it is not always enough.. 2 hurricanes and a long term illness has hurt my buinsess but I always seem to be able to bounce back. I'd like to bounce to a place that will allow the business to support my family now and in the future ... without selling my soul.
I'd appreciate finding out more about what you can do for me and how much it costs. 201-233-2157 or I'll give you a call soon. Thanks again.

Thanks Eddy. I just came up with these two ideas from seeing your post. I have never put myself in the gym owners shoes. I do know that marketing to millennial's is more about influencers and less about mass reach. A mailer or Groupon might bring someone across the lease line but how will you retain them? Aside from not knowing anyone in the gym they will be intimidates from what they perceive to be walking onto a team, at a discount.
On the other hand if your students were actively recruiting for you, they would be bringing in people that already know people and will feel as they belong. They may carpool and other various factors that come into play that will increase your retention rate. Without a dedicated staff to process your Groupon users you will actually be distracted and devalue the experience for the students you already have retained. Last but not least, the best time to have a deal like this is January. It seems to me that ALL gym owners should be competing for the "New Years Resolution" gym seekers.
The thought behind the ladies night is this, they are the decision maker in the majority of households. It is also a huge growing fan base for MMA so why not tap into it. BJJ is a perfect sport for girls of all ages, if only for self defense. If they are attacked it is not confidence they will need (usually gained at the Karate Dojo) they will find themselves on the ground with a bigger and stronger person on top of them. This is where they will need to defend from.
I will give you a call my cell is 805-280-9717 if you want to call me. I can give you a lot of FREE tips on geo based marketing tools that should enhance your business and people in the area to find your business without giving a huge discount.
Also gym owners do not take advantage of this but the UG, MMAWeekly and several other top MMA sites have the ability to sell people like you ads that only appear to people visiting those websites from your area.
