Serious Question for older Martial Artists -

Serious question for the older guys (and girls)

How do you trane?

I have been training in the MA since i was 10 years old. been running full time clubs for the last 12 years. i trane(d) every day mostly twice a day for many years.

I am now 44yrs young, i dont look anywhere near my age, but GOD i feel it.... more and more with every passing day.

I know most people dont respect TMA's but as a background, I hold a 4h Degree BB in Kempo Karate-Jitsu and our style combines all aspects of fighting, we spar pretty full on and wear a Gi, Mouth guard and MMA gloves, and that's it.. our system combines all aspects of stand up and ground (a bit like MMA in a gi)

now i dont claim to teach BJJ or hold a BB in BJJ so don't get excited, but i DO also take part in Grappling various sessions, both Gi and No-Gi

lately (the last 3 -4 year) i am finding it harder and harder to keep up with the younger Black belts, and regularly feel like SHIT after some hard training..

wanted to know if any older guys have any secrets to keeping age at bay that could help? as i dont know how long i can keep this up?

obviously the answer would be to JUST coach - but the thought of not join in the training makes me sad

cheers

(sorry for the FRAT)

please eat healthy and rest more. why are you focused on keeping up with younger black belts? I am assuming you taught them well and they now realise thier complimentary role in making you better as well. best of luck.trane safe , b healthy

ttt (nothing to add, just interested in hearing what other's say).

cheers bhealthy. i think its less about me wanting to keep up with them, as me not wanting to admit that i cant do the things i used to :/

you are totally right that my aim was/is always to make them better than i am.

thanks for a serious answer :)

Interesting thread Master.

I returned to Judo at the start of 2011 after a long period away. I'm 43.

As a former soldier I'm far fitter than the average 43 year old but I find a 2 hour session tough.

I get injured much easier than I used to.

My biggest problem is my work. I travel a lot (South Korea last week) and as a result struggle to train on a regular basis.

As already mentioned, sleep and diet are very important.

good awnsers by foxforce and bhealthy. I'm 36 and have found maca powder helps give me energy to train, I've also started a recovery booster supplement by vega after workouts. But ya, mostly good food and good rest

Yeah, bro. It's irreversible... You can't stop it but you can slow it down by healthy eating, rest and possibly proper supplements. I used to run like a horse I'm my twenties but now I feel I'll effects of my age. It's hard to admit that age is catching up with you :/ Phone Post

You can always practice martial arts. Just be real with yourself and let the younger blackbelts know your at a stage in your life where you want to "chill dawg" a little bit

Condroitin & Glucosamine and hot yoga slows it down some.

I'm 40, I am in decent shape but my cardio is long gone, I still roll with everyone. I tap a lot to save myself from injuries and recently have slowed my game down and use my weight (my gut, lol) a lot more.

I also rest a lot in north/south as most guys have no idea how to escape. The young ones really hate having an old timer grind sweaty guts and chest hair in their face. Works for me!

Also considering trt, I don't compete and would not mind getting a little jacked. Already have a kid so my balls are expendable. Phone Post

I'm kinda on the same boat. I started my business when I was 39, and haven't had time to train since. Now I'm 41... still want to get back into it when I finally can. Dunno if I can hang with the younger guys anymore... it's like I should be looking for a seniors only class these days, lol... I'm also plagued with chronic injuries (both knees, and right shoulder).

Stop trying to keep up with them and start out smarting them. As we get older our hurts hurt longer than the kids we fight with. I will be 39 next week and I can feel it when I go hard for a week when 10 years ago it would have been three days.

Even he couldn't stop old age.

44 years old? Since when has that number been concidered a "right to complain" number. Back in the 50's or 60's 44 was old, but since the workout fads of the 80's 44 is like being 30. Everyone is jogging or exercizing right into their 70s these days. Remember there are many guys in lesser shape than you!
It is a NATURAL thing for your body to lose muscle, speed, strength, hair color ETC over time, it's just a human being a human. Don't let it stop you.
I too practiced karate 4 nights a week but now it's one or two. I also practice BJJ once a week (wish it were more, but at 56 the classes kill me......But what a feeling after! The feeling of being sore, the feeling that you competed,of doing what people say is "only for the young".
When I train I go the best I can everytime, should I die tomorrow at least I had workout at my best. Now, be a young 44 and workout. oh, and take Aleve.

Just cut everything back, go lighter. Instead of doing two hours, sit some of it out.
