Should Gustafsson have kept cut secret?

Alexander Gustafsson is famously out of the UFC on FUEL TV 9 main event with a cut that went from "Oh Hell NO you CAN'T fight" to "um, oh, sure, I guess you could have."

Should Gustafsson have been discrete about the cut?

Vitor Belfort recently twittered an image of a cut he received ten days before the Bisping fight.

Vitor Belfort @vitorbelfort
This happen during a sparring session 20 stitches 10 days before the fight.#nevergiveup your dream

That fight went fine for Belfort.

Rashad Evans appeared on the April 2 edition of Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight, and offered his professional opinion.

"Whenever you fight, whatever the case may be, you want to make sure you are the best that you can be going into the cage," said Evans. "But I mean, you have three stitches. You don’t have to tell the commission about it, you’re volunteering information that you shouldn’t be. I know guys that had stitches going into it and as long as they make it past the physical on Friday before the fight then they’re good to go, but I mean, three stitches? Maybe it’s deeper or worse than it looks and he wouldn’t have been able to fight. I don’t know."

Should Gustafsson have stayed silent? Or does that set a bad precedent, where the promotion could be out of the main event with only hours to go? Or worst of all, by not bringng up an injury, could a fighter jeoparize his health?

Or was this a case of admirable fighter responsibility, with AC over reaction?

Tough position. If he took the fight and lost by referees stoppage, there goes his title shot.
I must have had the wrong doctor. That looks like a five stitcher to me. Phone Post

If he wanted to fight he should have. Still seems a little fishy he went out of his way to tell the commission soon after it happened.

If he tells nobody and isn't able to fight then he would be in the situation Hendo was in and Dana would have been pissed at him. This way it seems Dana is pissed at the commission and not him. But who really knows.

Fuck no! This is bad for the fans, but smart for Gus. A cut that fresh (and in the area it's in) could easily reopen and cause him to lose the fight.

He's amassed a nice win streak and is very close to a title shot, and so it would've been stupid to risk losing all of that by fighting with a cut. Phone Post 3.0

What are you basing this on? Show me qoutes/interviews or videos tec.. Because Ive only seen one vid with gus talking about it and it didn't come across like that At all.

Ofc I might have missed something etc. Especially with what you just said

They usually wait for the weigh-ins to check fighters. So Gus had to tell them to warrant an earl examination.

This is from MMAfighting:

Sallfeldt noted that the SMMAF was first informed of the cut on March 30. He confirmed that three doctors examined the cut, which was was reportedly suffered in training, shortly thereafter and all three came to the same conclusion.

Typically, the SMMAF's doctors examine fighters at the weigh-ins, however, Sallfedlt said that given the importance of Saturday night's Gustafsson vs. Gegard Mousasi UFC on FUEL TV 9 main event and all the speculation surrounding it, the SMMAF felt it was best to examine Gustafsson on Tuesday

That doesn't come close to explaining something like

"neither does storming right past the ufc and straight to the commission with the injury." though

Who noted the SMMAF? Is it confirmed that Alex did? (I wouldn't blame him, just want it confirmed that he didn't get snitched on and everyone blaming alex)

Who do you think informed the commission? Dana?

Perhaps just told Dana, Dana could have been working on a replacement behind the scenes if he didn't get cleared before the fight.

so, as rashad said, they have a physical on friday before the fight.

What if somebody then decided he was unfit to fight? That would have turned out even worse than it already is.

IMO his best course of action would be to approach the UFC, let them know about the situation and see what they think about it.

It's not like Gus decided all by himself, his team mates, or trainers/management probably had a say in the decision.

All of these "he's afraid of Mousassi" people really need to shut their retard mouthes, he just spend 6 rounds fighting Shogun Rua, and Thiago Silva, two of the scarier guys in the division.

"In the case of Alexander Gustafsson there was a request for an early indicative medical examination which was immediately performed on March 30th (Easter Eve)."

It's a tough one, pretty much lose, lose.

Keep it secret then get pulled at last minute ala Hendo/Jones situation and possible event cancellation......

Dana would be all 'this guy fucking knew about this weeks ago, now I've had to cancel the card blah blah blah'.

Then you have all the other guys who can't fight and don't get paid.

The UFC loses a shit load of money. Dana's head explodes due to an overload of F Bombs and declares Gus the spawn of Satan :D

Or...

Do what he's done, be honest, give The UFC a chance to save the card. The other fighters still get paid etc etc.

We all move on with no major catastrophe. Phone Post 3.0

the guy shouldnt be main event. He ran to the comission and got pulled. He wanted out.

Also, Dana is a prick if he punishes Gus in any way for backing out. A lot of fighters would be hesitant to go into a fight with a fresh healing gash above the eye. He's young and green and just wants to handle his career the best way he can. Props to em for making that big call. Phone Post 3.0

I wanna know how the fuck it got up there in the first place.. Someone shoot a free throw with it? Phone Post 3.0

Gus was scared of losing that's y they pulled that move. He could've fought other fighters done that before Phone Post

Yes, obviously

You guys saying that he wanted out are fucking pathetic. Phone Post 3.0
