Steven Marocco of MMAFighting.com is a hack writer

His assessment of Round 1 of Jones vs. Reyes:

"Round 1: Reyes comes right out with a shot and locks up in the clinch. Already, the challenger is cutting a more active foe for Jones. But Jones is attacking the legs early, blocking a high kick. And more low kicks from Jones, prompting Reyes to fire back with aggressive punches forward. They trade leg kicks and clash shins. Reyes circling and trying that angle. He's short. Jones gets warned for extending his fingers. Reyes keeping a pace that's active, though he's still a bit short. Reyes makes Jones sit briefly with a straight left and Jones shoots. Reyes follows up, and all of a suden, it looks like Jones is hurt. Jones goes with kicks to keep distance, and then to the body. Reyes starts to pick his shots and then backs off. Jones extending his arms again to get distance. Reyes attacking the legs now. A flurry of kicks from Reyes, who has Jones on the defense. Jones having a hard time setting up for his favored attacks, though his kicks are still there. Jones now following Reyes, and he draws a kick to the body. High kick brushes Jones' head, and another one is solidly blocked. Jones moving forward as Reyes tries to cut angles. Time runs out with Jones in pursuit."

Case in point (in bold font). Reyes makes Jones sit briefly? Where is any realm of combat sports reporting does one refer to a knockdown as "sitting briefly?"

There is an understood bias amongst MMA journalists but MMAFighting.com shouldn't be hiring fanboy writers to sugarcoat the fact that Jon was knocked down and battered for most of the fight. This style of reporting does not balance any interest in promoting Jon's next fight (if LHW) as it clearly does not delineate the series of events that unfolded.

If this blog was picked up by a major outlet, it would have been a pretty dull fight, nothing to see here.

Reyes 48-47!

edit: Steven Marrocco in thread title

It wasn't a true "knock down" in the classical sense. It was a punch to the chest which knocked Jones off balance and yes, he sat him down. Jones popped right back up and continued to fight. Don't act like Reyes dropped him like the classic flash KO.

and Jones was not “battered” either. Yes, he got hit but was at no point showing being actually damaged by the strikes. He kept moving forward and never slowed down while Reyes faded and backpedald for 3-1/2 rounds.

I don't like jones, but that wasn't a KD, the punch made him lose his footing, which isn't the same as losing footing because your nervouse system is shutting down.

It was not a knockdown, idiot

getting hit while you're off balance, sending you to the canvas, is a knockdown. Though it wasn't purely based on power, it still is a knockdown.

Otherwise it is a slip.

I would say technically it was a knockdown, just not the classic definition of what we are accustomed to seeing in MMA. Counter-punch + off balance = knockdown (not knockout)

Slow down friend. I highlighted what the writer posted about the exchange (in bold), merely pointing out how poor of a description it was.

Let's hypothetically run the exchange through boxing's 10-point must system. Do you feel an experienced referee would classify it as a knockdown or a slip?

Reyes had Jones in more bad positions. Battering does not necessarily imply every strike landed clean. Reyes landed the more vicious strikes, but Jones being the champ that he is, took all of them without showing much damage. I would also argue that Silva battered Jones for most of the fight as well.

OP thinks people who don't score fights like he does are hacks.

Its not about the scoring, but the writing aptitude of MMAFighting's contributor. That really is my concern about the lack of professionalism amongst MMA journalism on a large scale. There are some fascinating writers who bring the fight to life on paper (Shout out to Chuck Mindenhall at MMAFighting), then there are pessimistic authors who conduct a chorus of crickets with their written accounts.
