Willie Pep was my Grandpas favorite fighter.
Diego Corrales is mostly mentioned by casuals as a guy on Floydâs highlight reel. But he was exceptional before Floyd and better after against Casamayor, Freitas and of course Jose Luis Castillo.
Donât forget Holman Williams, Old Bones Joe Brown or Eddie Booker
Tony Zale
If youâre gonna put Donald Curry in there, you gotta put Mike Mcallum also.
Dude was legitâŠâŠ
I have this adorning my gym wall
For any Canadian boxing fans, check out Gordon Racette. From Vancouver Island and had a tear during the early 80âs, lost to Trevor Berbick w/ only a few years of training.More of a âfighterâ than pure boxer.First knew him as a lacrosse player/local bouncer in Nanaimo, BC, before he began fighting pro.A nice person, as well.Leon Spinx backed out of a match w/ him, circa '81.
this bloke was so good that he barely trained and would smoke and drink before fights.one opponent collapsed from exhaustion as it takes more out of you when you miss.
Used to love watching Emanuel Burton, then Augustus, fight!
Iâd argue that the Hawk has regained popularity recently because of his hitting prowess and heâs earned a new generation of fans because of highlight reels on YouTube despite the fact he was never near the top of the pfp list. How about Buddy McGirt?
Thatâs a good one,
He had a couple of tough fights against Pernell Whitticker
The boxing exhibition Mr Magoo put on vs Simon Brown was absolutely beautiful
Sanchez is definitely up there. A lot of old timers talk about Sam Langford. Iâd say Willie Pep for his legendary defense. Allegedly, won a round without throwing a punch.
I really feel like no one talks about how good Meldrick Taylor (and by extension how good Chavez) was. I think Taylor would absolutely annihilate Tank Davis in his prime.
Anyone who doesnât know Dwight Qawi isnât really a very knowledgeable boxing fan. If anyone needs an intro to that mean little bastard, (he stood only 5â6) I highly recommend his fights with Mathew Saad Muhammad and Holyfield. Much like a lot of great cruiser /lhws he was just not big enough to fight heavyweights but he was definitely great.
