How is this move thought of in BJJ gi circles? I think its a good hold for setting up half guard sweeps. In sub blue belt competitions, would it be considered illegal? AKA a leglock?

But now... to be honest - no... why should it? Unless you specifically go to a leglock from the position it is not one.
I personally think half guard is one big game and it's good to know and play butterfly HG; standard HG, lockdown HG; knee in HG and they all have their place. If you have a favourite you still need others to move yourself around to your favourite type.
The lockdown is the scorpion deathlock. The counter to it is the indian deathlock.
There is no counter to the indian deathlock. That move is the end of a series of 382 counters to counters. It should have a sign saying "you have reached the end of BJJ" on it. I saw this on Kukuk's tape, I think, after watching the entire set from beginning to end without pausing.
Uh, I sense some confusion.
1) The lockdown is a leg position for half-guard.
2) The scorpion deathlock is an option from lockdown, but they are not one and the same. The Scorpion has a number of counters, and the indian deathlock is one of them.
3) Eddie also uses the term "lockdown" for a similar leg position from the back (the legs are positioned in the same manner, but with the opponent (and his leg) facing in the opposite direction.
As far as its usefulness goes, I think Jorx nailed it. It is one of many half guard positions. It has strengths and weaknesses.
Personally, I only use it when I am unable to create the space I need to play my usual half guard game. I establish lockdown, swing my legs out and away, and voila space is established. I personally do not sweep using it. Also, I have other methods of creating space that serve the same function.
Not sure if what I use is the same as the lockdown, but if it is, it is the only thing that saves my ass and allows me to slow down big athletic guys long enough for me to work a sweep. It is and should be legal in all grappling and bjj competitions.
Thanks.
Been using it to get to half and half sweeps etc, certain higher grades have been moaning that it "hurts their leg"...more a case of their pride I reckon.
JJB,
I'm having a tough time visualizing how you would take the back from there... can you elaborate a little?
Thanks,
CC
Double under-hooks, use the lock-down to break their balance, pull them over your head as you scoot out, and roll up towards his back.
Ok, what I use is the lockdown then. JJB knows many ways to defend against it. Most people don't though and panic. It is a good move for the most part, but if someone does it to me, I could easily defend it. The stand up thingy I read on here wont work. At least on me, anyway, plus if someone stands or attempts ot stand in my half guard, I would be so excited for the many types of sweeps or reversals that would present itself.
JJB has posted on another thread (I believe) ways to get out. It's not too hard, you just gotta think about it.
My instructor has a great way to beat it to and that is to keep the person on the bottom from even figur fouring their legs.
Joe Van Brankle has a strange guard pass that works too, but I really dont know how he pulls it off, I think only he can do it. He breaks it everytime I try to lock him down and I cannot do anything to stop him.
Escape- hug the legs and sprawl.
I still dont see a difference between Lockdown and scorpion deathlock.
There is none except that the Scorpion is a more dynamic, kicking motion that can actually submit the guy whereas Lockdown is an off-balancing move used to facilitate a sweep.
I have Andre calves. I submit people from time to time. Admittedly that usually isnt my goal but most guys hate the pressure and some tap and I train at a VERY tough school.
One guy said "Its like a bad rock in your shoe. No matter how hard you try, it is the only thing you can think of."
I have tapped people with this as well. It only works once though. I have been able to sweep and reverse people with it as well.
Yeah I use to slow people down so I can set my sweep or keep thier weight off me. Trying a sub from my half guard, ok here comes the lockdown and crank a lil. That usually stops that idea.
Although I got subbed from my half guard last night.
wtf is a scorpion?
Stand up in the lockdown and make 'em wince.
