From a new column of mine today at Yahoo! Sports:
"...Sonnen walked a thin-line these past four years, since he either created or revealed his over-the-top and incendiary personality to the world. He finally leaned too far over to one side, we guess.
FOX Sports and the UFC didn't seem to care that Sonnen had already failed a drug test, been convicted of a felony and spent years spewing bigoted speech to promote fights when they hired him as a broadcaster and made him a public face for their companies. If anything, Sonnen's increased notoriety from those failures, crimes and offensive speech appeared to make the well-spoken fighter more appealing to FOX Sports and the UFC as a front-man for their broadcasts.
Until, it didn't.
It is easy to criticize Sonnen, and this writer has done it plenty, but it's also important to recognize the way the entire MMA world, all of us, tacitly encouraged Sonnen to continue to be Sonnen – use drugs, lie about it, commit crimes, say crazy and offensive things on television, over and again – right up until we excoriated him for being Sonnen..."

spent years spewing bigoted speech
He never did any such thing. At worst, what he said was nationalist.

Id like to see some sort of source, threads, anything that validates this statement.

which part - the drugs, crimes, lying about it, saying crazy things on television? The "source" for that would be having your eyes and ears open at any point during the past four years.
Or, do you mean the "we all encouraged him" part? that's an opinion, friend.
Love the gif, voted up for that.

He absolutely did. Many times.
Please elaborate, good sir.

Don't bother wasting time TQN, I regretted that I even gave it a click. Thought it might have some real insight, that was not the case.
lots of sensitive folks, here, I see. clearly, the article emphasizes how Chael's professional opportunities increased as his outlandishness increased. People most directly responsible for that are companies he worked for.
Fans and media don't have as much of a direct responsibility, but I think we should all look in the mirror when one of ours goes overboard as we all stand by and watch.

You know what, Chael Sonnen is better than the bigoted stuff he's tossed out there over and again in order to promote fights. Chael has used prejudiced and hateful speech to talk about people from other countries, other ethnicities and who speak different languages blatantly for years.
He's said stuff along those lines that would have gotten any of us fired from our jobs, repeatedly.
It's one thing to excuse it because you feel he doesn't mean it and was doing it just for fight promotion (I wouldn't agree, but it's a legit perspective) but to pretend he hasn't said bigoted stuff is either naive or denial.
CindyO - RorysBitch - Elias Cepeda - Please elaborate, good sir.
When has any fan EVER encouraged a fighter to commit crime?
Or use drugs? There may be some out there that dont care about steroids. However they arent also saying "man I really wish he started using steroids."
This.
Cindy
Oh and I've been on this forum since I was 15 and I've seen plenty of fans encourage fighters to use drugs and commit crimes:)

Stick around a few more years, newbie, and you'll find out.
I said that tongue in cheek but it's absolutely true. threads and comments encouraging people to do steroids, or rooting on fighters as they commit crimes are too plentiful to list.
RorysBitch - Id love for you two post 3 examples of people on here encouraging fighters to go out and commit crimes.
I get you have to get clicks but statements like that just make MMA look bad as a whole, and for you to be on a major news site like Yahoo. Its not a good look IMO.
Say you get on the main page, and someone who doesnt normally read about MMA just happen to see your article.
You really think you are helping the sport of MMA by telling those people MMA fans encourage its fighters to commit crime? or use drugs?
Gimmie a break.
I think most people will.understand that what is meant is that with our eyeballs and ppv dollars, we've encouraged it, and that by giving him more opportunites and defending him and repeating his misleading statements, the ufc and fox encouraged it.

Corey Hill should've done a cycle or two.
And drank about a gallon of milk a day.

If you don't love and side with Chael, I don't know what to tell you.
Bad times don't last. Bad guys do.
And any red-blooded American on this forum that doesn't think Sonnen/Stann 2016 wouldn't be the most awesome thing ever is a liar and an idiot.
That is all.
Oh my God that Presidential race would be awesome!
Sonnen/Stann (R)
Nader/Paul (D)
Could you imagine the ratings that presidential election would get!?
Holy shit Americans would be tripping balls and rightly so!
Stann/Sonnen with the republican brawn, up against years of wisdom in Ralph and Ron.
That's the dream matchup. Let's see what actually happens.
The actual candidates will be a bigger letdown than a UFC in Macau.
sekundarburnes - you would think the world of cagefighting might be free of sensibilities too delicate to handle jokes about brazil's primitiveness from a character like chael sonnen but i guess it's not
Brazilian people are not "primitive." Thats an.idiotic view to share, if you do, with Sonnen
