In our SUDDEN IMPACT DVD we have a section on
emergency preparedness. It covers a basic outline of what
people should think about/have ready in case of emergency.
It also covers some gear that I feel is important. Things like
med kits, radios, flashlights, Quik Clot, knives etc. This is a
"very important part" of Self Preservation Training. These
items are weapons that can be used to safeguard ourselves
and our families. This was brought to mind once again as we
just had a 6.0 earthqauke a few hours ago. Nine months ago
we had a 6.5.
The east coast was just hit by a series of hurricanes.
About 6 or 7 years ago we had a statewide power outage in
Ca. in the middle of the day. It blew peoples minds. No gas,
no food, no nuthin... (the stores closed as they could not
make electronic transactions).
Threat Recognition should extend into those, not so common
circumstances, which could affect the well being of our
families.

I know another big thing to have in those situations like you alluded to - CASH. out here in the desert a portable water filter is a good idea as well..
