THQ releasing patch for ‘UFC Undisputed 2009′ in response to online gamer complaints

UFC Undisputed 2009 flooded the video game market on May 19 to the pleasure of fans and gamers worldwide. It’s the first video game for the promotion since Ultimate Fighting Championship: “Sudden Impact” back in 2004 — five very long years.

While the reaction has been mostly positive, gamers found that online play (as well as the single player experience) presented its share of problems. The THQ forums have been lit up since day one with a list of grievances that included premature endings, questionable submission execution and much more.

The developers have apparently heard your cries for remediation and are currently working on a downloadable patch to correct most, if not all of the current bugs.

Herring In A Fur Coat -  fake news

*fixed

This is PR at its finest.

And when the game was released in May, did they have any idea these problems existed? naaaaah, of course not.

Not like they would rush a game out, would they?

Any way, I will be trying next year's Undisputed, and EA's game when it comes out, but I won't be buying this first edition of Undisputed.

I don't need to experience their shoddy implementation that badly. But if it is fun, don't let me ruin it!

Sounds like Yves Lavigne reffing a Koschek fight.

Nicely done!

So I am guessing when someone is KTFOd in online play it is just like an actual MMA bout, and the opponent immediately proclaims "What happened? Did I win? reality dawns on Fighter Why'd you stop it? I'm fine!" followed by angry pouting as the result is announced.

Should have gone with EA Sports.

I laugh at anyone who knocks THQ for this. This happens all the time in video games, not just the UFC game. It's not that they released the game early, it's that they are listening to the fans and how to fix the game.

Shame on those stupid asses at THQ for wanting to improve the game, with a downloadable patch.. for free.

Come on, listening to the fans?

On March 12 (atleast! Atleast! The game would have been just ready to go Gold at this point) of this year THQ and the UFC both knew what kind of issues they would have post-release. They made a judgement call to release the game any way, and what we see today is a result of said decision.

What fans want/expect from a game is the last thing THQ/UFC cares about. What they want is your money, in their pocket. ASAP.

If they come out any sooner saying they are working on a patch, then the jig is up, and we know they have been working on the patch since the day the game went to the publishers.

There is no excuse for shoddy execution, and just because you can release a patch post-release doesn't mean you didn't fuck up in the first place.

Like I said, I will be buying Undisputed next year, maybe by then they will have the kinks truly ironed out.

For the record, I haven't even played the game, I had just been expecting the standard 'rushed to launch' problems that many titles have experienced, and didn't want to go through that with an MMA title. WAY TOO FRUSTRATING!

I work in game publishing. There is no way THQ didn't know about the problems the disconnects was going to wreck online. Its a standard staple of any fighting game that people get pissed when you can just disconnect when you are losing.

Odds are, they just didn't have a fix for it in time for their release deadline, so they pushed it to the patch they've probably been planning since before the damn thing submitted to first party.

Do I blame them for it? Hell no. Nature of the beast in this industry. My company has put out a lot shoddier products that is for certain...

Most patches of non-Valve games rarely include such drastic changes to the core aspects of the game, particularly balance... THQ is essentially admitting that KOs are way too frequent, grappling with the AI is fucked and the online experience is broken because of people quitting out of matches. I could have told you about the first two problems after like 30 minutes of playing the game. So it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest the game was rushed out the door with them knowing about these issues, and they just decided to fix them post-release. This practice has been going on for over a decade now; I remember buying Quake II in 1997 and the multiplayer was totally incomplete, they patched it like a dozen times in the month or two after release.

UG News broke this story to me last night while we were playing UFC Undisputed on xbox live.   He dominated me with Coleman.

I could care less tht the game was incomplete upon release. Its not the first and wont be the last. My biggest fret is that the current sub mechanics suck! Im looking forward to the patch for this reason.

It's not the case that they're simply rushing out games...it's that they have to set a release date 5-6 months ahead of time in order to get marketing, shelf space, PR, etc...every day that they miss their target date by, they lose money. and in the eyes of their studio heads, every day that the game is done but not on the shelves is a day that they're losing money. The devs are actually doing a great job with this game.
