Tim Sylvia - Andre Arlovksi 1 revisited

If you haven't seen this fight, you should. I know there are a lot of younger fans on here but it happened at UFC 51 Feb 5, 2005. Watching it live was SO exciting cause the mainn event was for the vacant HW title after Mir's motorcycle accident.

The entire card was stacked ; Tanner-Terrell for vacant MW title and Tito-Belfort. The Preliminary card saw Drew Fickett losing to Nick Diaz by first round stoppage. But the main event was the reason everybody was there.

I love leg locks & the Pitbull knocked Sylvia down & clamped down with an achilles lock so hard & fast, that Sylvia had no option but to tap.

A thing of beauty.

Mmm, hard and fast, just how I like it. Phone Post

Sylvia's arm break by Mir ruined him as a top guy more than anything else. He turned into a quick tapper after that in some of his most important fights: Arlovski 1 and Big Nog.

The second fight was great because Tim shocked the world

I think with the arm break still on his mind, Tim tapped quickly not wanting another injury.

You can tell even just after he tapped how pissed he was at himself for doing it.

Exactly. He probably could have escaped if he stayed composed, but the ghost of Mir was haunting him. He tapped the second Nog locked the choke in.

This fight should also count as a submission win for Mir. Phone Post

In a fight he was easily winning, as well. He had Nog out on his feet in the first round.
All he had to do was stay off the ground.

Think about how the dynamic of the UFC may have changed if Tim had won that fight. He would have been the interim champ, and faced Mir, and more than likely would not have left to go to Affliction and fight Fedor, which really was the beginning of the end for Tim's career.

Would he also have coached TUF opposite Mir instead of Nog?

Mind Bottling...

Not how I remember that fight at all!

Nonsense, you have a junior world champion in sambo slap on a leg lock and see how it feels, it'll make mir's subs feel like your being tickled.

I've heard that Arlovski learned Sambo in the police academy and was never a junior champion, and that was added to his resume to make him more Fedor-like

Great card. I remember watching AA and thinking he was unstoppable at that time. Phone Post

we all did

he was one of the top mma fighters on earth at the time

but his weak title run didn't gain him too many more fans

As Dana white put it
"we had arlovski and Tim fighting eachother almost every weekend back then"

The HW division was not at it's best Phone Post

I think now, with the landscape of mma covered with stories of trt and peds....its fair to say Arlovski was probably on steroids back then.

The man was certainly a beast tho. Never really saw a HW do something like that in the UFC. Pride of course was ahead of its time with regards to its HW division back then.
