From what I saw Izzy looked to do the same thing he’s always done and Strickland didn’t let him get his shots off. It was clear what the plan was and he stuck to it. Keep him backing up with pressure and touching him up with the jab and he didn’t stay at Izzy’s range, Izzy likes to keep people at range with his long limbs. Strickland kept just inside of that when he was throwing and largely dictated the distance.
By the end it was obvious who won Izzy looked like he was in a brutal fight and Strickland looked like he just got done with a tough workout.
The copium today is amazing. “Izzy always had no power and a weak chin, he only beat Alex because he had a bad cut, Izzy is 34 his reflexes are bad, he couldn’t even finish Cannonier and Vettori!” Nothing about Sean’s perfect performance, game plan, and execution, or amazing cardio.
That said please Lord no immediate rematch. Adesanya is 1-2 in the last year, let’s get either DDP or Khamzat/Costa in there.
They’re just parroting Dana who said this in the post-fight presser. Dana claimed this when trying to build an excuse for a rematch. Reality is Sean’s defense and unwillingness to play into Izzy’s counter striking game, allowed him to expose Izzy in a way no one else has to date. Izzy looked lost.
Izzy is now 1-3. If he gets an immediate rematch, it’s purely because of reasons outside of merit, and the integrity of the UFC’s match decision making should be questioned thoroughly.
If the UFC wants to be considered a legit sport, this sort of match decision making needs to end.
He also appeared impervious to leg kicks. He was inside 80% of the fight and didnt clinch once. Incredible fight, Im still processing it. This is one to rewatch a few times.
We do know that because we’ve seen it before with Alex izzy cannot handle a pressure fighter izzy does not like to get hit he is a tactician Sean Strickland and Alex are guys that would be fighting in bars if there was no UFC because it’s what they were born to do izzy can’t handle that type of man
Usually Izzy is a low volume guy, who is usually winning by a small margin with leg kicks and flashy but not brutally powerfully question mark kicks and shit.
He usually is slightly ahead on the scorecard, waits for the opponent to get antsy and attack, when the opponent attacks, izzy is brilliant at taking his body off center line and KOing. (see rob whit)
In this fight he never got “ahead” to make his plan work, and getting dropped in the first put him way behind the 8ball.
Kudos to stickland for never getting wild, (except trying to finish after the drop). Strickland tried to check every low kick, keep his hands high, protected his skull, and mostly managed to avoid the wild swinging exchanges where Izzy is super successful.
Not a ton happened overall other than the 1st round drop, but what did happen was a couple nice punches from strickland. Izzy never got his game going. He even tried his shell up and possum game on the fence and Strickland never bit on it like periera did in the second fight.
