Top 5 lightweight contenders??

Guillard
Bendo
Siver
Guida
Sherk

Of course outside the ufc Melendez and alverez are top dogs as well

Thoughts??? Phone Post

Henderson
Guillard
Melendez

Melvin vs. Cerrone has to happen I think

And Gil needs to be in the UFC... BLAF's latest excuse was the fans weren't demanding it, so, uh, let's start demanding that now.

I don't think Sean Sherk is anywhere close to the top 5 in mma or even the UFC that matter. He hasn't fought since September of last year in a bout that most people, including Dana White, thought he lost. Before that he lost to Frankie Edgar in May of 2009. So basically he's fought twice in 3 years and probably should have lost both of those fights. I think he's barely top 20 at best at this point.

Top 5 in the UFC after Edgar-Maynard would probably have to be:

Melvin Guillard
Ben Henderson
Clay Guida
Denis Siver
Jim Miller

Miller shouldn't drop too far, after all the guy did win 7 straight coming into this fight. If you include fighters outside of the UFC than you have to Gilbert Melendez and Eddie Alvarez into that mix.

No order just random Phone Post

Idk how sherk wouldn't be up there when his only 4 losses come to legit ufc champions. The layoff is keeping eyes off him but there is no way that a victory over him won't shoot you into stardom!! A gatekeeper at best but with 2 or 3 more w's over top contenders you really can't deny him his shot.

And yes this is only a ufc thread but opinions on other fighters outside of the organization isn't out of the question.

Also cowboy, barbosa, dos anjos, wiman, stout, and j-lo are names to keep your eyes on

My list still stands
Ben
Melvin
Dennis
Clay
Sean Phone Post

JEREMY STEPHENS Phone Post

Siver and Guillard.....things are not always what they seem.....

In order, IMO:

Ben Henderson

Dennis Siver

Melvin Guillard

Sean Sherk

I'm not saying that Sherk isn't a good fighter still. Of course he is and I don't think he's an easy fight for anybody at 155. But it's difficult to argue in a RANKING sense that he's anywhere near a top 5 in the UFC at this point. He's literally fought twice in 3 years and should be in 0-2 in that timeframe. On top of that

Remember, rankings are based mostly on what you've accomplished in the semi-recent past. Legacy plays a small part in it, but it's really a "what have you done for me lately" sort of thing. His last fight was in September of 2010 against Dunham. He doesn't have a fight scheduled at the moment so it seems likely that he will be off for more than a year.

In a ranking sense you have to put him below these guys:

Melvin Guillard
Clay Guida
Ben Henderson
Jim Miller
Denis Siver

I don't see how you could possibly rank him higher than Jim Miller at this point. Miller is 9-2 in the UFC in the last 3 years, Sherk has fought twice in nearly 3 years and is 1-1 with a very controversial win. I think you could also make an argument for ranking Gleison Tibau,Rafael Dos Anjos, and Sam Stout ahead of him simply because of Sherk's inactivity. I think Sherk might very well beat those 3 but that's not what rankings are all about.

Henderson seemed to totally step his game up but has no one mentioned Pettis? He beat Henderson, remember?

That's another good point. Pettis should be right outside of Melvin, Henderson, Guida and Siver. I know the UFC doesn't like to matchup fighters where one is coming off a win and one a loss, but I think a Pettis-Siver matchup would make a lot of sense and it would most likely be an excellent fight.

1.   Maynard right?!

2.   Guida (as much as I can't stand him; he's earned his way here)

3.  Guillard  (ditto above)

4.  Henderson

5.  Siever

Am I missing something?!  Why is my list the only one that includes Maynard?!

Samoanpowr - Am I missing something?!  Why is my list the only one that includes Maynard?!

I think Maynard's sort of been lumped together with Frankie until after their title fight. He's obviously the top contender and is fighting for the title in October. I figured the purpose of this thread was the top contenders after those two, basically who's next in line after they complete their trilogy.

I guess my last and only way to justify sherk is if he takes on Jim.

If pettis takes out stepehens with dominating fashion lmao then yes he should be up there. But as of now I'd rather put Sean, Jim, and Donald ahead of him.

Masdival may be strikeforce company, but that wreckage of kj should put more eyes on him also Phone Post

Ahhhh, "I see" says the blind man.  Ok, I get it.  Here is my adjusted one then:

1.   Guida (as much as I can't stand him; he's earned his way here)

3.   Guillard  (ditto above)

4.    Pettis

5.    Henderson

Please tell me that the name "Bendo" won't stick.  Please.

  1. Maynard 2. Melendez 3. Guida 4. Guillard 5. Alvarez
